  • Blasts Kill 143 at Iraq Shiite Shrines

The bombings produced a wave of Shiite outrage — much of it directed at U.S. troops in the Iraqi capital. U.S. soldiers who arrived at Kazimiya were attacked by angry crowds throwing stones and garbage, injuring two Americans.

"This is the work of Jews and American occupation forces," blared a loudspeaker outside the Kazimiya shrine. Inside, cleric Hassan Toaima told an angry crowd, "We demand to know who did this so that we can avenge our martyrs."

KARBALA, Iraq - Simultaneous explosions ripped through crowds of worshippers Tuesday at Shiite Muslim shrines in Baghdad and Karbala, killing at least 143 people on the holiest day of the Shiite calendar, a U.S. general said. It was the bloodiest day since the end of major fighting

If they just redirected their energy toward, say, crosswalk-signal maintenance, America would be 2 percent more livable.”

Who could have predicted that this type of fighting would happen if we destabilized the country with no concrete plans to maintain order?

Well, for starters it would have taken someone with reasonable knowledge of Middle East history: tribes; factions; cultures; disputes; partners; enemies; religious sects; etc!

And if you couldn't find such a person, then form a coalition with those who posess such knowledge, like the UN, for instance!

Former Senator Gary Hart told Chiis Mathews last night that he expects that US troops will still be in Iraq 25 years from now!

I agree. There is no historical basis for a united Iraq - it was forced onto the people in the beginning of the century by the British and it has been unstable ever since.

Actually I think this would have happened eventually anyway.

They need to grow up as a country. It's normal growing pains.

Here's a very good article summarizing the Hisotry of Iraq - I'd recommend it to anyone interested.

Bush bought it, we own it! Iraq has been a tremendous expense and drain on our treasury. Iraqi oil was supposed to pay for most of our cost! Hasn't happened! May never happen!

Add poor financial planning to the list!

Terms like "The Fog of War", and "Unexpected Consequences" should not be applied to
the mess we've helped to create in Iraq!

I don't believe that to be accurate. I thought we expressley stated that we would only use Iraq oil to pay for basic neccesities like food and water.
