  • College or minors?

If you had a son who pro scouts said have MLB type stuff, would you allow your kid to sign with a pro ball club, for development in the monors, or, would you push them toward college?

    minors without question.

You can go to college @ any point in life. You can only get that multimillion dollar contract based on potential once.

      College without a doubt.

It's hard to "make it" in baseball. So, if he doesn't make it big, at least he'd have an education. Plus he'd get the college experience. That would be better than riding buses and making very little money while missing an education.

College, without a doubt. College prospects have a history of doing better in the pros and why not get three years of a Stanford education for free?

I appreciate the feedback. My cousin who celebrated his 40th yesterday, has a high school senior, who has had several MLB clubs express interest.

This begs the question Kev, do you have a son being scouted by the pros?

Minors - but ONLY if the club would include the College Scholarship Program, which guarantees four years of college - and can be used after the end of his playing career.

It's actually a better guarantee that he has his education covered than taking the college scholarship from the college team, because those go year to year, and if your kid blows out his arm as a freshman, his scholarship can disappear (along with his professional chances).

If the pro team was unwilling to include the College plan, then I would probably urge my kid to go to college, because it would indicate that the pro team wasn't that committed to him.

College. No doubt in my mind. The odds of a high schooler making the majors and/or multi millions is pretty remote. The longer he can stay in college and eventually get that degree to fall back on, the better in my opinion.

See if he gets drafted. If he's offered good money, take it. It's probably his only chance to get paid to play a game. If not, goto college and get an education.

But I'll stress this again: YOU CAN GOTO COLLEGE @ ANY POINT IN LIFE. YOU CAN ONLY BE A VERY GOOD PITCHING PROSPECT FOR A VERY SHORT TIME....AND A VERY GOOD PITCHING PROSPECT CAN MAKE MORE ON A PROSPECT CONTRACT THAN MOST COLLEGE GRADS MAKE IN THEIR LIFETIME.

I have a concern about how college coaches use their better pitchers.

bingo. Some are more concerned about getting the most out of them for those 4 years than what's best for their lives.

If he does take a contract, make sure that his dad or some responsible adult helps him manage his money. There's nothing more dangerous than a young man with money burning his pockets.
