  • Fu#$%ing Microsoft - Smart person please

So my wife turns on the PC today and this screen comes up Configuring Updates Stage 3 of 3. - 0% complete. Do not turn off your computer.

It has been in that stage for the last 8 hours. I finally get on a chat with some dumbass tech support guy and he provides a link that doesn't do a damn bit of good. Now, the PC is continually rebooting and everytime it comes back on I get the same screen with the message above.

    Any ideas?

Google showed lots of solutions, none of which I understand. I do not have the Vista CD, it was preloaded.

yeah, one of the Google links said that. How do I do that? When I turn the PC on I get a BIOS menu and something else. Should I start it in safe mode? I have no idea what I am doing.

First try leaving it alone overnight with it connected to the internet. Sometimes these things iron themselves out in a few hours.

Otherwise, find someone with a Vista DVD.

A computer expert I am not, but you are going to need the Windows CD that came with your computer. Try popping it in and rebooting and it should auto boot from the cd. If it doesn't use google to figure out how to boot from the cd.

I do not think he has the DVD.

Well then use your hacking skillz to get another one.

I have never heard of a computer not coming with a cd...

If it was preloaded, it might have a partition with the cab files on it (essentially the DVD on disk on a separate partition.)

Is System Restore still part of Vista if you boot into safe-mode?

No idea what the 1st paragraph means.

When I booted in safe mode, it listed a bunch file names and then I got the same screen I said in the first post

It is actually becoming increasingly prevalent to give people no CD and instead load the .cab and other original files on a hidden partition.

Well in that case he should find the instructions to utilize this.
