where is the access point (router) and where is the laptop or desktop?
I mean there could be interference between you and the AP like microwaves or lead paint or stuff like that.
Can get a signal booster like this:

This is what I do for a living now - wireless networks

My access point is downstairs and my son's desktop and daughter's notebook have no problem accessing the signal anywhere in the house.
I'm using a Linksys access point from EBay that I bought 2 years ago. And, frankly, it has never occured to me that "winning" a debate is important, or that I should be hurt when someone like Airshark or kah, among others (for whom winning a pseudo debate or declaring intellectual superiority over invisible others is obviously very important) ridicule me.

Try nice music, some wine and a good meal. Otherwise the only thing that may work will be therapy, or an ethernet wire
XP and 2000Are you on the list?
