  • NLMVP Thread -- Pujols wins

While it's still too to decide on your NL MVP ballot, it is time to gather a list of candidates. This list of candidates includes players I think are legit candidates, and those the media stupidly thinks are legit candidates (see Ryan Howard). Feel free to add any.

    Albert Pujols
    Lance Berkman
    Carlos Delgado
    Manny Ramirez
    Chipper Jones
    Hanley Ramirez
    Matt Holliday

    David Wright
    Aramis Ramirez
    Ryan Braun
    Ryan Ludwick

    Ryan Howard

Pitchers are omitted. No one has been so incredibly dominant to warrant discussion.

EdIT: Those in bold have been included in the treatise, somewhere below:

That order makes sense, but if the Phillies get in Ryan Howards 200 strikeout and failures as a 1st basemen will be largely ignored.

          Mets win East= Wright

Cardinals win 8 of 10 and Pujols wins the Batting Title/OBP/Slugging and Mets fade = Pujols

Phillies win East and the Cardinals continue to suck = Howard

            Bingo...

Not that it's scientific, but ESPN site viewers voted for Howard...the BBWAA will largely be enamored with his late surge and will get a lot of votes -- rightly or wrongly...

No way on Delgado, especially being higher than Berkman...

And this swoon will take a huge hit on his 'chances'

And Manny -- a possible, albeit a stretch, candidate himself, says Pujols deserves it...

Outfielder has made a difference for Dodgers, but he thinks award should go to Cardinals' Albert Pujols.

By Dylan Hernandez, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
                7:26 PM PDT, September 17, 2008

PITTSBURGH -- Walking across the clubhouse to his locker, Manny Ramirez literally went out of his way to say that he didn't deserve to be the NL most valuable player and that Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals did.

"I voted for Pujols," Ramirez said.

The vote that Ramirez was talking about was for the player of the year of the Players Choice Awards, for which the Dodgers were handed ballots Wednesday. The MVP award is voted on by baseball writers.

"It's nice that some people think I deserve it," Ramirez said. "I'd like to win it. But I have to be realistic. Someone who was only here for two months doesn't deserve it. It should go to someone who played the six months of the season."

If ryan howard steals another MVP from Pujols it might very well be the worst MVP selection of all time. I could care less about his strikeouts- the fact that his OPS is over 200 points lower than Pujols' and that he is a butcher defensively at first base is the difference. Pujols' is the best player in baseball, he's the best hitter in baseball, he's the best defender at his position in the game, he's a good baserunner, and he's had the best season this year of anyone in baseball.

                    It really shouldn't be close.

                      Unfortunately, it probably won't.

I can't see how Manny Ramirez is even being discussed. Glad to see he agrees.

I think an inordinate amount of sports writers will probably simply over look Howard's .240 average and go ga-ga over his home runs and RBI's.

For the same reason that Howard is: the team's turnaround/hitting since said player got hot...

His impact has helped the Dodgers improve to, what, 6 games in the standings? And he's hit .400 and slugged 14 dingers and driven in 44 RBI since August 1...

Not saying he should get it, but one had to figure he'd get consideration given that line...

I have been criticized here for my strong opinions that Ryan Howard was not the NL MVP when he won the award; if he wins this year, it will be a travesty far greater than his first win. And that is saying something.
