DELTA TOWNSHIP, Michigan (AP) -- Michigan authorities say a shoplifting suspect died after being crushed in a trash compactor where she was hiding.

The Eaton County sheriff's department said two women fled a Lansing-area TJ Maxx discount store after spraying a security guard with Mace.

A deputy found one of the women behind a trash compactor.

Deputies say the woman wouldn't say where the other woman was hiding.

Shortly afterward, authorities got a call about a woman trapped in the trash compactor.

Tyree Monique Tate of Delta Township was pulled from the machine by rescuers and taken to a hospital, where the 26-year-old later died.

Another Darwin award nominee, and a local one to boot. Evidently she had a history of neck problems (read posted comments) and was doing this.

FESTUS — A woman from Poplar Bluff, Mo., died Sunday after attempting to do somersaults on an inflatable slide during her stepson's eighth birthday party.

The Joachim Plattin Ambulance District responded to the Jump Zone Party Palace about 2:20 p.m. and found the woman, Sheri Stevens, 28, unresponsive at the bottom of a slide, said district Administrator Curt Steve. She may have broken her neck, Steve said.

"It was just one of those freak things," Steve said. "It's very tragic. These are never easy calls, especially when you have someone so young like that."

Family members did not want to comment.

Visitation is set for 5 to 8 p.m. today at Mahn Funeral Home in De Soto. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by burial at Peaceful Ridge Cemetery in De Soto.

Survivors include her husband, Shawn Stevens; father, Steve Hendrix of De Soto; mother, Sandy Hendrix of Festus; a stepson, Alexander Stevens of Scott City; and three sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital or the Sheri Stevens Hendrix Benefit Fund, c/o First State Community Bank, 328 North Main Street, De Soto, Mo. 63020.

Dear God, KBF here. I'd just like to say thanks, once again, for allowing Dusty Baker and I to live during the same time period. Every time I think he's given me his last gift -- overpitching Prior in the playoffs, getting cocky in Game 6 vs. the Angels, blowing another game for the Cubs -- he does something stupid like pitching to Albert Pujols. Thy will be done, baby!!!!!
