O'Sullivan! Orton! It's San Fran at Chicago!

ESPN's pre-sneezing broadcasts are lazy. Individuals desperate to make an NFL team litter the sidelines, no doubt with compelling stories. That's how you make the second half of these games compelling. But ESPN makes little or no effort to spotlight one of these guys, tell his story, and watch him on the field. It could be like the Q-School documentaries. Instead, we listen to the talking heads prognosticate about the coming season. Yawn.

I'm almost embarrassed to say this but I'm not sure how much I'm going to watch of this game.

Thursday morning I'm heading east to the great state of Louisiana for a couple of nights of drinking and gambling. I have A LOT of work hate built up since my last trip so I'm going to see if it is possible to OD on Miller Lites and Caribbean Stud. No wife. No kid. Just me and the boys. Of course I planned this trip ignorant to the fact the game was on Friday Night. I thought it was Saturday.

There is a bar in the casino and by the time the game comes on I should be down a few dollars and could probably use the break. I'll at least watch the first half. What I miss I'll catch up on as the DVR is scheduled to record the game.

          WHISPERS BEGIN REGARDING MERRIMAN’S CONDITION
Posted by Mike Florio on August 21, 2008, 12:22 p.m. EDT

In the wake of a report that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman visited with renowned orthopedist James Andrews regarding Merriman’s knee, we’re hearing that there is quiet concern within the organization that Merriman could be done, after only four NFL seasons.

Merriman had arthroscopic knee surgery during the offseason. He made the trip to Alabama to see Dr. Andrews because of persistent pain in the knee. (Curiously, there’s a conflict between the two major San Diego papers regarding the identity of the doctor who performed the procedure. The North County Times says that it was Andrews. The Union-Tribune claims that it was team physician David Chao.)

Officially, coach Norv Turner says he isn’t worried. “My concern will be if it lingers,” Turner said Wednesday. “Hopefully, it won’t linger and hopefully in the next week to 10 days, he’s going to be all right and ready to get going.”

As we hear it, there’s already concern, behind the scenes. Nothing may come of it, and Merriman might end up being fine. But the team is definitely worried about the possibility that Merriman could be done.

“He’s had some soreness,” Turner said. “I think he wants to make sure he gets it checked out and make sure everything is all right with it. When he’s been able to practice and move around, he’s looked awfully good to me.”

There’s no denying that Merriman is awfully good. But, like most athletes, it’s hard to do much of anything with a bum knee.

I'll be there. Completely forgot about the game until about an hour ago, tho.

Good thing my neighbor, who I'm going w/ tonight since the wife out of town, called to find out when we were leaving.

Looks like Mike Martz's latest find, J.T. O'Sullivan, is going to land the starting gig...

Few quick thoughts on tonights game...

                    * Looks like Kyle Orton doesn't suck. Don't know how good he'll be, but he doesn't suck. He doesn't have Grossman's arm, but he's got a better arm than he did in 2005, and he seems to make a LOT better decisons. Oh, and if I'm Smith, I make Haney (sp?) the 2nd string QB. And I don't even know that guys name.

                    * Forte >>>>>>>>>> Benson

                    * Babbich has killed this Bears defense. They suck. They got bitch-slapped by a guy named O'Sullivan. O-FUCKING-SULLIVAN!!!!!! That's like the most pansey name for a QB EVER!!! And it frightens me what other teams will do against this Bears defense if they couldn't stop an O'Sullivan.

                    * A prediction of 4-12 for the Bears seems, at this point, to be optimistic (if you're a Bears fan, anyway).

I'm definitely not holding my breath on this one, but O'Sullivan might actually be decent...

                      I can't believe I just typed that...

Let's wait and see how he does against a good defense.

This Bears defense is awful. No reason it should be - a lot of the same players that aren't that old - but they are. I don't see how Babbich hasn't flat-out killed that defense.

Clearly, he's a plant for the Packers.

                          PACE AGGRAVATES SHOULDER INJURY
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 22, 2008, 10:43 a.m.
Rams left tackle Orlando Pace played just one game in 2007 before suffering a torn rotator cuff and labrum in his right shoulder that ended his season.

Pace is back this preseason, but the shoulder is still bothering him. And now Pace has acknowledged — despite what Rams coach Scott Linehan said — that he aggravated his shoulder in the Rams’ preseason game Saturday.

“I did it when I was trying to make a tackle [after an interception]. I landed on it pretty hard,” Pace said, per Bill Coats of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I didn’t even think about it … I didn’t even feel the swelling until Monday, when I came in and I couldn’t raise my arm too high. That was a little concern for me.”

Pace said the shoulder is structurally sound, but he hasn’t been able to practice this week and it’s not currently known when he’ll get back on the field.

The 32-year-old Pace was once among the best offensive linemen in the league, but between the shoulder and a torn triceps muscle in 2006, he has played in just one of the Rams’ last 23 games.
