  • TimeShare Seminars

Reading the Hurricane thread made we wonder if any of you guys have ever sat through one of these timeshare seminars just for the purpose of a free or cheap vacation? Knowing there was no way in hell you were going to buy but take advantage of the company giving the presentation by suffering through the schpeel?

How long do these presentations usually take? Do they put the hard sell on you so much you have a hard time saying no?

The wife and I sat through one of those in the Bahamas once. I forget what we 'got' out of it (it wasn't a free vacation - might have been a room upgrade). Took half a day, and they almost refuse to take a 'no' answer. We were nice about it - may have even had a fleeting thought - but ultimately, we couldn't justify it. They get real pissy once they realize they can't make money off of you.

    We wouldn't do it again.

that was kind of my question... I mean they have to know most people are there for the free shit only. I was wondering how pushy they got and whether it was worth it to suffer through the sales presentation.

I've never done it but have some friends who did one for a free vacation and they had horrible expereince.

The people running the thing were very pushy and tried to guilt them into signing up for a TimeShare. They also dragged the thing out to almost an entire day. My friends said they felt since people weren't signing up they were going to make them sit through even more BS.

Screw that!! There's no way I'm wasting a full day of my vacation listening to that kind of garbage to save a few hundred bucks.

sounds like they were held hostage.

at what point do you just say "Screw you, that's enough. The answer is no", and walk out?

But that's the thing, what if the reason you are on "vacation" is you're getting a cheap place to stay?

my wife and i have sat through one and it was horrible. once you say "no" they turn up the heat big time. tag teaming, bringing in manager's etc. we had to get down right nasty to get out of the room. we were only staying around to have a shot at the "free prize" guarantee of either a new chevy blazer, big screen tv or a cruise. we "won" the cruise. however did not include destination to san juan to get on the boat or any of the taxes and port fees. i.e. we didnt get anything.

I just don't have that kind of patience, at all. If we can't afford the vacation we want to take, we'll save for it for next year.

My wife and I sat through one of these two hour presentations while on our honeymoon. We had signed up for a time slot that was immediately following a pretty rigorous hike in the national park, knowing that we had no intention of even thinking about buying into anything. We strolled into the air conditioned room, gladly accepted the bottled water they offered and sat back in our cushioned chairs to hear the pitch.

After several periods of "I'm going to go over here for a few minutes so you two can talk about it...", a couple of tag-team attemps and a few cookies later, we finally convinced our slick-haired salesman that we were, in fact, not going to be putting money down on anything he might offer. We were released to the exit room where we waited a few minutes for our $100 in cash.

Considering we were hot, tired and thirsty from our hike, we feel like we really planned this activity well. We got to relax in the AC for a while, drink some water, eat some cookies and made some decent cash to boot.

I'm sure it's not the normal experience though...

My wife and I sat through one of those presentations for a Vegas vacation. When they figured out we had no money to buy a timeshare, they quickly escorted us out. They gave us a voucher to be redeemed later for the vacation, but it turned out to be a worthless piece of paper. The phone number was disconnected and our letters were returned "no known address".

I wouldn't waste my time on a timeshare seminar ever again.

                            I would only go -

If I wanted to buy a time share -

Otherwise - its jerk off city.

There was an ad to go to one while we were in Hawaii for a brand new condo opening later that year. I picked up the flier and read about it. They would pay you 100 bucks to be there and give you food and refreshments. No mention of what that was. Prolly bottled water and a banana or something. Their kicker was they offered discount pricing if you went as opposed to just buying one later in the year before or after it opened without attending.

I spent maybe 30 seconds thinking about how great it would be to own one there and then realized that it would be so damn expensive to not only own it but to fly there and do things there every single year. Would be awesome, but way too much money.

As I was reaching to put the flier back, the guy passing it out started begging me to attend and giving me a guilt trip and a lame used car salesman pitch the entire time. Sales 101 type BS.

I was glad I didnt go and felt bad I wasted 1 minute of my time in Maui on looking at a piece of paper or listening to an ass beg me to show up. Glad I didnt waste 4-8 hours on anything I have no interest in doing. I'd rather pay the extra X amount of money and avoid it than save money.
