  • Cubs hatred - where does it come from?

I got into a conversation w/ my neighbor over this (a big Cubs fan), and I'm curious about this. Why do so many of you seem to hate the Cubs?

I mean, sure, the 2004 and 2005 teams, I get. That was about as unlikeable a bunch of guys as you could possibly put together for a team. But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. And if you look at other hated teams, I get it. As a Blues fan, I certainly get (and partake in) the hatred for the Red Wings, as we've just been their bitch for the last 15 years. But I don't think they hate us, because we haven't been a threat to them and haven't had any success. I see why people don't like the Patriots, as successful as they've been lately. And I understand the fact there's a rivalry between St Louis and Chicago. But the Cubs have no history of success, they haven't won anything of note since the mid 40's, and even when they seem to be close to succeeding, they manage to lose in a way that only they can. Is it just that their fans hate us so much (being that we've actually had success) that we feel we need to hate them back?

Like I said, just curious. I've never really hated them (outside of 04 and 05) because I just don't see them as a serious long-term threat to the Cardinals. It'd be like hating the Detroit Lions as a Bears fan. And I know it's not just a city thing, because most of you seem to like the city (or at least visiting).

At least with the Blackhawks, there were years of actual back-and-forth rivalry going on there in the 80's and early 90's.

To be fair, we have a number of those ourselves. An afternoon at BOTB should convince you of that.

I can't fucking stand them. I hate them.

Generally a bunch of assholes. Baka and all his bullshit those years. Pinella isn't a ton better in that respect.

Prior was an ass. Now Edmonds is just being a dick for the other team.

Its bullshit that they picked the Pirates blind and get ramirez and loften and simon that year for nothing. That is perhaps what pissed me off the most.

They always get their young "stars" treated as if they are the next coming, but generally fail.

Frat-boy moron fans are the ones you see the most and are the most obnoxious. You rarely see Cubs fans such as yourself.
When you say to your neighbor, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night if that's alright with you," what you really mean is, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night."

You need to be re-indoctrinated in St. Louis for one week and you'll learn the hate.

Fuck them. I love seeing them fail year after year.

Stop right there - I'm not a Cubs fan. I will NEVER cheer for the Cubs over the Cardinals.

The difference is, in most years (again, except had it happened in 04 or 05), if the Cubs made the playoffs and the Cards didn't, I'd pull for the Cubs. Part of it is, sure, I live up here and having the World Series up here is cool (see White Sox in 2005). In fact, I'd love to see an all-Chicago World Series (although in that case, I'd pull for the Sox). But I don't hate the Cubs overall. They're more like the little brother windmilling at me as I held them off by their forehead.

Lived there the first 22 years of my life, and never hated them. Don't know that that would change now, unless the Cubs start winning a lot ala the Red Wings.

When I go to a game there are always fans for the other team. Lots of transplants here and I guess just a bunch of losers who want to be different.

By far, and I mean by far the most annoying bunch are Cub fans. Even when they were sucking ass I'd still have to deal with annoying Cub fan in his Cubs jersey, Cubs sweat bans and Cubs hat telling me my team never won a World Series and that I suck.

Now that they are a good team it is brutal. The bandwagon is full and they all come out of the woodwork with the Cubs are in town. They just can't simply cheer for their team. They have to cheer and be a-holes about it.

I don't have time to fully answer this right now, as I'm off to the game shortly...

However, they have A LOT more douchebag fans then STL. Wrigley field is awesome, but as the teams greatest asset, it's also been the fandoms greatest detriment. Too many douchey meatheads that don't know shit about their own team, but still like to talk trash who are there for the event that is Wrigley Field, the world's biggest beer garden.

And for the record, I got sucked in when I first moved here in '99 and thought "this isn't so bad. I don't really hate the cubs." Then I got to become more familiar with the fan base.

And for the record, I live here but could never, ever cheer for the cubs to win the WS no matter who they were playing. Sorry.

I was happy to see the Sox win.
                          Of course you do.

Umm...I think CtBF was just curious as to everyone's reasons (i.e. specific incidences or occurrences) for hating the Small Bears, not just re-affirmation that you do...

It's actually a tough question for me, as my best first answer was "I don't know, I just do because they're the Cubs"...

Maybe the 1984 Ryne Sandberg homerun game?

In all honesty, there haven't been many opportunities for on-the-field bad blood between these two teams a la BOS-NY...

I think alot of it is media driven and it feels natural to have a team you really hate...

                              You, nail, head.

Your second to last sentence got it - there just hasn't been a lot of reason on-the-field wise for bad blood. And believe me, I understand hating a team because of fans (see Packers, Green Bay). But it was more the lack of on-field reasons that made me wonder about the hatred.
