I got into a conversation w/ my neighbor over this (a big Cubs fan), and I'm curious about this. Why do so many of you seem to hate the Cubs?
I mean, sure, the 2004 and 2005 teams, I get. That was about as unlikeable a bunch of guys as you could possibly put together for a team. But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. And if you look at other hated teams, I get it. As a Blues fan, I certainly get (and partake in) the hatred for the Red Wings, as we've just been their bitch for the last 15 years. But I don't think they hate us, because we haven't been a threat to them and haven't had any success. I see why people don't like the Patriots, as successful as they've been lately. And I understand the fact there's a rivalry between St Louis and Chicago. But the Cubs have no history of success, they haven't won anything of note since the mid 40's, and even when they seem to be close to succeeding, they manage to lose in a way that only they can. Is it just that their fans hate us so much (being that we've actually had success) that we feel we need to hate them back?
Like I said, just curious. I've never really hated them (outside of 04 and 05) because I just don't see them as a serious long-term threat to the Cardinals. It'd be like hating the Detroit Lions as a Bears fan. And I know it's not just a city thing, because most of you seem to like the city (or at least visiting).
At least with the Blackhawks, there were years of actual back-and-forth rivalry going on there in the 80's and early 90's.
