  • Changing jobs question...

So I am getting a job offer from another guy in town who I worked with in the past. I'll get about a 10% raise over what I am making now, and have health, vision and dental insurance to boot, paid for by them, so that'd be like getting another 5-10% raise on top of that. I pay about 100 a month for my own health insurance now with a larger deductible than I'd have at the new job because my present company doesnt offer health insurance. And I have no dental or visual insurance, which I could use.

Sounds great, right? Problem is that even though I havent had a raise in 2.5 years of working here, I like my boss, its just the two of us, and I like having my own quiet space and not having to deal with other people. Plus I get free Cards tickets whenever I want them

In short, I'm comfortable and happy here.

On the flip side, I like the other guy I'd work for too, and with 7 mouths to feed other than my own and the cost of everything going up, I am feeling the financial pinch of that plus not getting a raise. The extra 300-500 bucks a month sounds good. Plus the job is at a larger company and provides a bit more job security. The downside of the new job is that I'd give up my present environment, which is perfect, and I potentially might have to deal with somebody that I dont like since there will be 10-15 others in that office, which is draining to me. But the other place is a pretty good company to work for and they have bonuses and profit-sharing, so I'm pretty torn.

I feel a certain amount of loyalty to my present boss who has always gone out of his way to keep me happy, so it'd be tough to leave. But I'll probably discuss the offer with him and see what he thinks, as he told me about an offer he got from another company a while ago but decided to stay here.

What would you guys do if you were me?

Yep, my "raise" was being allowed to work as much overtime as I want, with time and a half pay.

The bosses boss, the developer who pays us, said that we arent making enough money. We could be if he'd pay us better for work that we do on his jobs, but thats another story.

I know with 7 mouths to feed it makes it hard to turn down the money but keep in mind your happiness with the job and surroundings in your uppermost thoughts. You can't underestimate happiness in the job no matter what the cost. Go with your gut feelings. Good luck no matter which way you go.

Irony of ironies, the guy wanting to hire me used to be a Baptist preacher.

And I'm not kidding. Hes a great guy though.

I recently had positions where I may have been contacted after I left and if they did, I was going to be sure to charge them for it. That is something they knew before I left as well. Cash only.

Thats what I've been told, to go with your guts. And I've experienced and heard from others that being happy with your work environment is worth more than making a bit more money and not being happy. But who knows, I may be completely happy at the new place. I already know that I'm happy here but not real happy with the fact that everything has gone up except my salary.

Seems like an extra 3-500 a month PLUS free insurance makes this a no brainer, man.
