    Potential Risks

What results do you want to achieve?
Sometimes, diet and exercise won't work—the weight just keeps coming back. Don't give up, we may be able to help. Studies have shown that weight-management surgery, compared to non-surgical treatment, yields the longest period of sustained weight loss in patients who have failed other measures. But remember, it takes motivation, patience and self-discipline to ensure successful results.
Bariatric surgery has come a long way since it was first introduced in the 1950s. Unfortunately, the first procedures rarely achieved good results, making the development and acceptance of later procedures much more difficult.
Today, great advances have been made in the field of bariatric surgery. We now offer two of the most-successful, least-invasive procedures. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but their results are far better than anything imagined only years ago. Each procedure is matched for a certain type of individual, so choose the one best-suited for how you want to live your life.

What are the risks associated with weight loss surgery?
A certain amount of risk occurs with any operation. The degree of risk varies with the type of surgery, and both the past and current health of the patient. Your St. Alexius NewStart surgeon will review all of the potential risks and benefits.
How long does the procedure and recovery take?
Both procedures take approximately 1-2 hours. With the LAP-BAND, patients typically spend the night at the hospital, and are able to return to work in one week. With Gastric Bypass, patients typically stay 2-3 days at the hospital, and are able to return to work in two weeks.
What kind of results can I expect to see?
The average LAP-BAND weight loss in a United States clinical study was approximately 50% of excess weight, 2-3 years after surgery.
In one gastric bypass study, the average weight loss after one year was 101.2 lbs and after five years was 75.9 lbs.
Will I have a lot of excess skin?
The more a person weighs prior to the surgery, the more excess skin they will have. Exercise can help, but sometimes it is not sufficient and patients choose to undergo plastic surgery. We recommend that you wait one year after surgery to make a decision regarding plastic surgery.

Anyone have any insight, anything really bad to open my eyes to before doing this?

BTW, my brother happens to do this as his specialization.

He no longer does lap bands. Patients who get them have far too high a rate of regression. He now only recommends bypass.

                      Not at all.

I hope you're doing a full bypass, as expressed above. Other than that, I hope you've done the full battery of pre-op testing, counseling, and study. You need to take ownership of your procedure and what the doctor will be doing to you, and you need to fully understand what it entails.

I don't have to blow cash on this.
