PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist whose "last lecture" about facing terminal cancer became an Internet sensation and a best-selling book, died Friday. He was 47.

Randy Pausch emphasized the joy of life in his "last lecture," originally given in September 2007.

Pausch died at his home in Virginia, university spokeswoman Anne Watzman said. Pausch and his family moved there last fall to be closer to his wife's relatives.

Pausch was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer in September 2006. His popular last lecture at Carnegie Mellon in September 2007 garnered international attention and was viewed by millions on the Internet.

    aww, man. That sucks.

I watched that lecture a few months back. What a great attitude he had, and the twist at the end when he said what the speech was for was cool.

I would recommend anyone that has a free hour or so, find the video on the net and check it out.

I've never sat down and watched. I've heard it's incredible. I'll have to do so soon.

I can't agree more. You can download the audio from iTunes, but I'd recommend getting the video - it is amazing.

Only thing left now is to sell the rights to his story.

Look for a highly publicized major motion pic in the next couple of years if not sooner.

They'll have to change the ending. Doctors find cure...he's reunited with long-lost father....decides teaching isn't his thing and heads to Vegas....

Just finished viewing some YouTube footage of an interview he conducted with Diane Sawyer. Regarding a story about his life:

"Can't be done," he responded. When asked why, he continued, "There's no Hollywood actress pretty enough to play my wife."

                        Very cool.

On YouTube, the related videos to this one include many people talking about how that video was life-changing for them. The Diane Sawyer interview has lots and lots of people repeating that. The cynic in me says that it's the kind of thing where people have a powerful emotional response, so they feel changed, regardless of whether they change their actual behavior. But it is unquestionably a powerful lecture, one of the ones you'd remember if you had been in the audience.

I suspect the impact is greater the older you are. The part about his father and the Bronze Star - "It just didn't come up" - I've gotta confess, it teared me up a little. Definitely worth watching.

There's a section in the Sawyer interview where he says that if it'll make her happy, he wants his (hot) wife to remarry. I wouldn't want to be the guy who has to fill Randy Pausch's shoes. Kinda like Lois Lane's boyfriend AFTER Superman.
