The Major Case Squad is searching for gunmen in separate attacks overnight that left one man dead and one seriously wounded near Jennings and a teen-age girl critically wounded in Florissant.
Police say they don't think the two crimes are connected.
About 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, a 15-year-old girl was shot in the chest by a purse snatcher near Spring Drive and South New Florissant Road.
She and another girl, 15, had been at a friend's home in the area and were walking home. They told police that two young men came up to them and demanded their purses. One of the young men flashed a pistol.
One of the girls clutched her purse and ran. Her friend was shot in the chest. When police arrived, the injured girl had collapsed on the sidewalk but was conscious. Her purse had been taken. She was able to talk to police briefly.
Florissant Police Chief Bill Karabas said: "We're hoping and praying she does survive."
Based on the girls' descriptions of the attackers and some accounts of witnesses driving by, Karabas said police believe the men are 18 to 20 years old. They fled in a green coupe-type vehicle similar to a Pontiac.
"We are following up some promising leads," the chief said.
Karabas said the area has a few car break-ins and the occasional burglary but nothing violent like this. He asked for help from the Major Case Squad. Anyone with information is asked to call Florissant police at 314-831-7000.
About midnight Wednesday, or 20 minutes after the Florissant shooting, police in Jennings were called to a double shooting in the 7200 block of Emma Avenue.
One man was shot to death, a second man was seriously wounded. The men were found outside a home.
Ladue police Lt. Bill Baker, commander of the Major Case Squad, said the team of investigators was called in to investigate that crime, as well. He said it's too early to talk about a motive. Baker said the name of the man who died won't be released until investigators notify his relatives.
