The Times response makes perfect sense--The rejection is supposedly only temporary, as it is in many cases of op-ed pieces--he needs to submit a better draft--but bet on McCain to refuse to change a thing, and use it as a campaign issue claiming the press has it in for him.
That would not be bad politics on his part---people assume the liberal press is stacking the deck, even as it gives him a free ride. Kind of like I will cut your taxes, cut foolish democrat spending, run a huge expensive war and balance the budget.v
