  • New Yorker's satirical cover with Michlelle and Barack--Barack is not amused

It is a liberal magazine, poking fun at the attitudes of....see...there is no problem....

Mike Allen reports that Obama took a question (from NBC's Athena Jones) on the cover of the New Yorker:
“The upcoming issue of the New Yorker, the July 21st issue, has a picture of you, depicting you and your wife on the cover. Have you seen it? If not, I can show it to you on my computer. It shows your wife Michelle with an Afro and an AK 47 and the two of you doing the fist bump with you in a sort of turban-type thing on top. I wondered if you’ve seen it or if you want to see it or if you have a response to it?”

Obama (shrugs incredulously): “I have no response to that.”

The magazine explains at the start of its news release previewing the issue: “On the cover of the July 21, 2008, issue of the The New Yorker, in ‘The Politics of Fear,’ artist Barry Blitt satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign.”

the thing is---there is also a long article....it is good, especially if you are a conservative who wants to scoff at the messiah thing---or if you are a democrat who has that fear that he is too much like Dukakis, McGovern and Kerry.... it will shatter a lot of illusions about the lofty idealist candidate...Obama is just another politician---and damned good at it. I liked the final paragraph of the long article:

    Lizza on Obama's Chicago.

Obama has always had a healthy understanding of the reaction he elicits in others, and he learned to use it to his advantage a very long time ago. Marty Nesbitt remembers Obama’s utter calm the day he gave his celebrated speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, in Boston, which made him an international celebrity and a potential 2008 Presidential candidate. “We were walking down the street late in the afternoon,” Nesbitt told me. “And this crowd was building behind us, like it was Tiger Woods at the Masters.”
“Barack, man, you’re like a rock star,” Nesbitt said.
“Yeah, if you think it’s bad today, wait until tomorrow,” Obama replied.
    “What do you mean?”
“My speech,” Obama said, “is pretty good.”

    that's bad.

All she needed was a speech baloon with "What it is?", or something equally stereotypical.

I agree, however I've thought that joke was funny for a long time.

They should get Rickles for the next one.

I'm ready for Obama to stop repudiating and apologizing for everything.

In his unique position, he's forced to.

BTW, some people aren't fond of crude humor. My wife for example has never been a fan of sexual and bathroom humor.

Reading between the lines, I don't think they published the most colorful of his comments.

To some degree, but lately he's been playing defense too much and allowing t his kind of shit to get the attention. He's better on offense... great communicator of some intelligent, adult policy ideas. I want more of that.

Mac’s appearance was Obama’s first celebrity event of the evening. Later at a Lincoln Park nightclub, Obama spoke to a raucous crowd of music fans, who paid up to $500 per person to see a performance by Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy, and two other band members.

“Before these guys go, I want them to know that I had heard a rumor that they had suggested that I had nothing by them on my iPod,” Obama said. “That is not true. I love Wilco.”
