  • Wainwright cleared to throw; Carp throws simulated game

    By Derrick Goold
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    07/07/2008

Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright was cleared Monday to begin a light throwing program, and Matt Clement cleared waivers so that he can continue his lengthy attempt to return to the majors.

Wainwright had a magnetic resonance imaging exam on Monday morning, the results of which led team doctors to allow the pitcher to begin a throwing program, general manager John Mozeliak said. Wainwright has been out of the rotation since June 7, when a pulley in the middle finger of his right hand ruptured.

"We'll give him the week to do (the throwing program), and we hope that at that time he can increase his intensity," Mozeliak said.

Clement, who completed a rehab assignment last week, cleared waivers Monday morning and was immediately optioned to Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals signed the righthander to a one-year deal after he missed the entire 2007 season because of shoulder surgery. Clement has not had the velocity or the success as a starter to return to the majors, so the Cardinals will continue to see how he fares as a reliever in Triple-A.

By optioning him to the minor leagues, the Cardinals keep Clement on the 40-man roster, where he will be eligible for a September promotion, at the latest.

At the same time the Cardinals had two pitchers clear hurdles, Chris Carpenter continued his progress. Carpenter threw a 60-pitch simulated game in Jupiter, Fla. Mozeliak called the reports of Carpenter's simulated game "glowing." As with all of the righthander's throws since Tommy John surgery ended his 2007 season, the day after such games tells as much about his recovery as the performance in simulated games.

Carpenter's schedule has him set for a few more simulated games although starting a rehab assignment by the end of July is a possibility.

Wainwright is the part of that that matters.

But it's also nice to see Carp doing so well.

You know, if Matt Clement can be effective as a reliever, that might be a nice little silver lining in this whole thing...

I think we're thinking the same thing: with his arsenal of four pitches he could be an effective reliever right like that. He may also be able to muster the arm strength to only work an inning at a time but that could help him push his fastball up into the 90's, too for short work.

          Sure bears watching.

Yes. I'm pretty sure Carp out dueled Mark Prior.

What's Prior's status now, if you know?

I'd love to see some sort of study done on the injury rate for MLB pitchers who went to college versus those who came up through the minors. It just seems to me that college coaches really tend to over use their pitchers. Then when these guys arrive in MLB, they tend to run into these kinds of issues a bit more.

If I didn't despise him so much, I'd almost feel sorry for him.

and how'd he do in his other four appearances as a reliever?

Nearly as well as Mark Mulder did in his first relief appearance.
