  • The Blockbuster Trade That's Coming for The Cards

It was times like these that Walt was pretty good at trying something.

Cards in contention and they need a couple of things. Walt could always pull something - or so it seemed.

The Brewers have added C C - the best thing about that deal is the Cubs didn't get him - nothing else good. We must now hope for brittle Ben to revert or the Brewers will be plenty plenty good - if they can get some bullpen consistency.

The Cubs lead the league in Wins - so that makes a third team in the division in the playoff chase - One of us will not make it.

Had the poll been taken at the beginning of the year - it would have been us - to not make even the top 3. As it is - I really like our chances.

Wainwright and Carp give us two pitchers that we can add that will be better than what ever the Cubs pick up.

We then would need a bat -

    Who does Mo go get?

I don't see us pulling off a "blockbuster". We aren't just a player away, no reason to send off potential prospects for a B or C list player.

The bat is going to have to come off of the waiver wire, no? Someone who's no sure thing, just a player who we hope can get hot.

      Is Will Clark available?
      Of course you do.

The advantage that Jocketty had that very little GMs -- if any -- have these days is he capitalized on salary dumps...

I don't see a blockbuster at all and like I posted earlier today, they'll likely land a lefty for the pen and an under-the-radar, rental bat...

Bingo. Lefty reliever(that's better than Villone or Flores...which isn't saying much) can be had fairly cheap. Rental bat is a possibility, but I don't even see where they get one. The outfield is overloaded right now with guys looking for PT. SS? Doubtful since a decent one will cost too much in trade. 2B, for the most part, hasn't been a bad spot offensively. Not sure what will really be out there. RH power bat is ideal.

The best way this team can contend is to get Wainwright and Carp back and pitching well.

Not sure. But word in the Windy is the Cubbies are gonna go hard after Harden. Whether Billy B. will roll over like a Pittsburgh Pirate (who gave up ARam for nothing) is another story.

The only way "blockbuster" is going to be associated with any Cardinal trade this year is if it involves dealing Reyes in exchange for 3 free movie rentals

No to the so called blockbuster. We went into this year knowing we were building something for next year and the years after. Do not blow that plan up just because you had a bit more success than expected in the first third of the season.

As in, Rich Harden? Are the Cubs looking for someone to disable so they can bring Rich Hill back up?

Don't remember where I read this but some wag on a fantasy baseball site once wrote something like, If Billy Beane calls offering pitching, hang up the fucking phone.

I don't see anything significant happening. My guess is that if anything did happen, it would be for Burnett as there is some level of match there that wouldn't have to include Rasmus.

I think that if Wellemeyer can't pull his head out the Cards are in for a long slow fade whether they add bullpen or not.
