  • Little Cesar back and Barton to DL?

    From Bern's blog

    - Brian Barton doesn’t look good at the plate. He jammed his hand/wrist on the last road trip while trying to make a diving catch, and the rookie outfielder has been hurting. It’s difficult for him to handle the bat with sufficient strength and flexibility. The Cardinals probably will place Barton on the disabled list when they activate shortstop Cesar Izturis from the DL. (Possibly Sunday). This would be beneficial for Barton, who is batting only .203 with a .273 OBP since May 8. Barton’s playing time has decreased, and the Rule V draftee needs to play, needs the at-bats. It’s the only way Barton will draw out his potential. When the injury heals, Barton can go on a one-month rehab assignment and get plenty of ABs.

    - The imminent return of Izturis is timely, because Brendan Ryan is 3 for 31 since June 25. Ryan has been overexposed a bit at the plate, but has played well at shortstop.

This is actually not a terrible development.

When ready, Barton can spend 30 days in the minors on rehab before being called up and get some everyday PT that he needs.

And yes, Barton has been AWFUL at the plate since the 'sar went down. I think we may be seeing what the organization sees in Ryan. Solid utility guy, but maybe not an everyday player.

I was wondering if he was allowed rehab time since he is a Rule V guy. I agree it will provide him some time. Realistically, I can't see the Cardinals being contenders unless Barton picks up his game or the team replaces him.

I don't Barton means anything close to that much. He doesn't really factor into their success at all.

Yeah, I agree. Why do you think that redman?

A deep bench that can fill in and give guys a breather is just as much a part of the team's success as anything else and right now Barton doesn't have dick.

Though, as Moon says, when you're concerned about the 25th guy on the roster, life is good.

It's a part, but I don't think it would keep this team out of a playoff spot. There are certainly bigger parts to this than the last outfielder. Duncan for example.

He might have to rehab at AA to get full time AB's.
                RIP Dave

I don't think that Barton provides enough offense off the bench. I'd much rather have a right-handed guy with some power and pinch-hitting experience. ( Oh my God, I sound like Tony LaRussa)

I was all for Barton being on the roster at the beginning of the year, but that was before we knew about Schu, Ludwick, Mather et al could do. This 30 day assignment couldn't have come at a better time.
