So he opines in today's Bits...IF he gets to 400 HRs...
I know we've had this discussion before, and I've been on the fence as to whether I think he's a HoF'er...
But I'm inclined to say "yes" now...I started this thread at the Pressbox, and Bernie provided some numbers:
Again, it's important to view his career through the prism of playing CF, and against other CFs.
I ran some numbers through the STATS database, and unfortunately for the kind of check I wanted to do, the stats only go back to 1974.
But still, this gives us a good glimpse of how Edmonds rates in the last 30+ years when compared to other CF, a fairly significant sweep of history ... and keep in mind that these numbers are based on his hitting as a CF, only ...
* Edmonds is second to Griffey in OPS, and it's close: .932 to .920
* Edmonds is tied for second in HRs (with Andruw Jones)behind Griffey ...
* Edmonds is second in slugging (Griffey 1st) ...
* Edmonds is 5th in RBIs ... but, by the end of the season (if he stays healthy) he'll be third. And at some point next season, he'll pass Bernie Williams and move into the No. 2 spot.
* Edmonds is third in RC/27 behind two sure Hall of Famers, Griffey and Rickey Henderson.
And it's close: Henderson is 7.37, Griffey 7.27, Edmonds 7.17.
(and of course, Henderson played a lot of LF; that RC/27 is just as a CF).
Then throw the Gold Gloves into it...
And review that Snider comparison (thanks for that).
compelling case, IMO.
