  • Rush Limbaugh's Monstrous $400 Million Contract

Damn that's a lot of money. Via Drudge:

LIMBAUGH SIGNS THROUGH 2016; $400 MILLION DEAL SHATTERS BROADCAST RECORDS

    Wed Jul 02 2008 09:02:18 ET
    **Exclusive**

The American broadcast industry is rocked, realigned and blasted into a new orbit, yet again, by Rush Limbaugh, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

In what is being described as an unprecedented radio contract, Limbaugh will keep his syndicated show on-the-air and e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e through 2016 with CLEAR CHANNEL and PREMIERE RADIO.

Already host of the most lucrative hours since radio's inception, Limbaugh's total package is valued north of $400 million, according to media insiders.

The NEW YORK TIMES will claim this weekend that Limbaugh, marking 20 years this summer as a national host, has secured a 9-figure signing bonus for the new deal, newsroom sources tell DRUDGE.

    MORE

In its controversial profile, the TIMES reports that Limbaugh is buying a new G550 jet and is making an estimated $38 million a year.

[The cover photo of the TIMES Sunday magazine depicts Limbaugh 'dark and sinister' in a theme of THE GODFATHER.]

While newspapers and traditional broadcast media are experiencing declining revenues, Limbaugh's golden microphone has turned diamond-laced:

Earnings now pace him ahead of the annual salaries for network news anchors: Katie Couric, Brian Williams, Charlie Gibson and Diane Sawyer — combined!

    MORE

The deal represents a stunning triumph over the establishment by an outsider who connected with and captured the spirit of the nation's heartland.

I didn't realize anybody actually listened to his show anymore. I guess this new contract reflects the juicy material ahead when Obama wins and the Democrats control both houses.

The Red Wings picked up his contract 'cuz they need an agitator.

Here's the NYT mag profile: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/06/ma...augh-t.html?hp

                    Two things:

                    1. I can't believe he gave NYT this much access.
                    2. I can't believe the NYT wrote what essentially is a puff piece.

They are paying Rush by the pound.

I thought it was a pretty good article. I found his comments on Hannity O'Reilly, etc. to be of particular interest. The part about Rush being a genuinely nice guy is something I've heard before. Family Guy did an entire Star Wars episode that went to DVD. Rush Limbaugh had a small role in the show. In the extra sections, Seth MacFarlane said that although he can't stand Rush's politics, he found him to be a very nice guy who was generous with his time. Who'd a thunk it?

This is why I take his opinion (and others like him) with a grain of salt. For that kind of money I'd say whatever the hell you want me to say on the radio. You would think Rush might be doing some of the same.

I bet deep down he is praying for an Obama win. He would have a solid 4 to 8 years of material.

Well, it's not like his ratings went down during the past 8 years.
