  • NHL UFA Signing Day GDT - July 1

Let the insanity of having the $57M cap begin. I am still hoping for Rolston for the Blues, but tis probably a pipe dream. And also someone taking Brewer off our hands.

Dear God, KBF here. I'd just like to say thanks, once again, for allowing Dusty Baker and I to live during the same time period. Every time I think he's given me his last gift -- overpitching Prior in the playoffs, getting cocky in Game 6 vs. the Angels, blowing another game for the Cubs -- he does something stupid like pitching to Albert Pujols. Thy will be done, baby!!!!!

A Hossa or Campbell sized splash? No. A Rolston or Redden sized splash? Maybe.

They don't have a lot of cap space, and I don't want to see them spend to the cap anyway. Their financial situation is still questionable. I think they will let the marquis names get snapped up, and then try to pick up a second tier guy or two.

The Blues really gain nothing except losing the chance at the #1 pick by getting a big money free agent this season...

They have a ton of cap space - at least $10 million. And Checketts said they wouldn't spend it.

They shouldn't...last year's splash hasn't worked out as hoped...

Sunday night - Sports Plus had a clip on - Rennie's line said something about Checketts having 2nd thoughts in buying the team...I fell asleep and didn't get to find out wtf they were talking about - did anyone catch that and can provide some kind of brief recap on it?

Moon asked in the other thread...

Which was the same as what we had last year, and that was before we drafted Pietrangelo. Why spend money on a puck moving defenseman when we have a number 4 pick, Polak, Wagner, and Jonlund all on the cusp of making the team?

                              Moon
Our top four, as we sit here, are Jackman, Johnson, Brewer and McKee. That leaves three roster spots for some combination of Wagner, Woywitka, Polak and Pietrangelo. Combined, that's 136 games of NHL experience, 87 of which belong to Woywitka. Polak has health questions and in watching Junland at prospect camp, he looks like he could seriously benefit from at least a year at Peoria.

If we don't sign a defenseman, we'll likely start the season with Jackman, Johnson, McKee, Brewer, Woywitka, Wagner and Pietrangelo. That's 3 out of 7 guys with less than a full season of NHL experience and a fourth who has never played more than 34 games in a season. If it were up to me, I'd rather sign a veteran and let Petro play another year with Niagra.

Of course, in a perfect world, we unload McKee on someone and create room for Campbell or Redden and a forward.
