  • GDT (L) St. Louis (48-36) vs. New York (40-42), Tuesday, 7:15 p.m

STL: RHP Todd Wellemeyer (7-2, 3.46 ERA)
Wellemeyer's return to action after missing time with a sore elbow was a success, pitching well his last time out. He had a very good fastball and slider, and he believes his changeup won't be far behind. He was handled gently in his first start back, throwing only 76 pitches. Expect a longer leash this time around. NYM: RHP Tony Armas (First start of 2008)
Armas will get called up from Triple-A for the start, and, depending on how he pitches, the 30-year-old veteran could potentially assume the long-relief role for the Mets in place of fellow callup Carlos Muniz. In 16 appearances with New Orleans, Armas went 5-6 with a 2.50 ERA, striking out 88 batters and walking 20 in 100 2/3 innings of work. He is a career 3-2 against them with a 3.98 ERA in nine outings, seven of those being starts. He'll have his work cut out for him in facing Albert Pujols, the best player in baseball.

    Tidbits
Aaron Miles extended his hitting streak to 12 games on Monday. He is batting .428 during the streak and is two games short of tying his career high. ... Wellemeyer will make his first career start against the Mets. In his career, Wellemeyer has come out of the bullpen four times against New York and has posted a 5.06 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. ... At 48 wins, the Cardinals have a chance to become the eighth Cardinals team to win 50 games by the All-Star break. Albert Pujols is the best player in baseball.

It's a crime that he won't be the starting first baseman in the All-Star game.

Yes, and no...He does belong there, but, he can rest his calf...And the bottom line, people with a baseball IQ above 5 know that Albert should be there, so WTFever. Albert just misses that bonus part of his contract.

I don't care if he plays or not. He should have the honor of being voted first at first base.
