It's not often that the hometown team Ace goes down for the year (oh, wait, yes it does). It deserves it's own thread. How else will we track him being ahead of schedule, having a set back, needing follow up surgery on May 3rd, 2009.

Will Carrol's comments about it being a 'simple' surgery and it not usually having any long term impact on a guy's career was encouraging.

Not to break up the IN party, but the game preview from MLB.com says he's on the DL with a sprained finger. Either it's not as bad as we thought, or it is precisely as bad as we thought and it's more injury bullshit from the front office.

At this point, if it's torn, it isn't going to matter if he has the surgery today or 3 weeks from now since either way his season is toast. I kind of wonder if it is torn, and he's going to throw on the side for a couple weeks and see if he can find a way to effectively pitch through it. If it's torn, it's a 4 month recovery so even if he doesn't get it done till late October, he'd still be ready by spring training. If it is only a sprain, then we may have dodged a serious bullet. At some point, I would really like to see him and Carp pitching together, at their best, in the same rotation. Is that too much to ask?

True enough. Unlike with Carpenter last year, when accepting reality early in the year would have brought him back sooner this year, Wainwright is either able to pitch this year or he is not and will be ok for next spring if it doesn't work out. So they can't f*ck this up, right?..

Well of course they could.

But if's it's torn completely, it isn't going to get any worse, so if he can pitch through it and be effective, why not. If he can't, then have the sx and be ready for spring next year.
