  • Wildfire out of control near San Jose

Seems to be moving south, away from the city, so that's good...but I know people who live in Gilroy, about 3 miles away from this, so that's not so good...

      The very same.

However, it now appears to be moving south towards Corralitos and Watsonville, and not east towards Gilroy, so I think things are looking okay for now...should be able to get a handle on it soon, since the winds are going to die down tonight and it's going to be cool all weekend...

Could burn 10,000 acres before it is fully contained though.

        Sad news.

We are devastated to report that Big Basin, as we have known it, loved it, and cherished it for generations, is gone. Early reports are that the wildfire has consumed much of the park’s historic facilities. We do not yet know the fate of the park’s grandest old trees.
Wildfires are often the tragic manifestation of our global climate crisis.

California has no firefighters either. Traditionally California has used prisoners to fight wildfires, but they are too sick with Covid.
From this day forward, I no longer shall tinker with the machinery of death.

For more than 20 years I have endeavored-indeed, I have struggled-along with a majority of this Court, to develop procedural & substantive rules that would lend more than the mere appearance of fairness to the death penalty endeavor.

I feel morally and intellectually obligated simply to concede that the death penalty experiment has failed.

The path the Court has chosen lessens us all. I dissent.
