Seeking camaraderie and cohesion among his troops — plus a desire to do things differently from last year, when the Rams slumped to 3-13 and the bottom of the NFC West standings — coach Scott Linehan decided a few months ago that the team would hold training camp out of town.
The question became: where?
Club officials considered returning to Western Illinois University in Macomb, site of training camp from 1996 to 2004. They also looked at several sites in Wisconsin, with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater emerging as a finalist.
Although the club is delaying an official announcement until details are complete, it has decided on Concordia University in Mequon, Wis.
Players tentatively are scheduled to report July 24, with the first practice scheduled for the next day. Camp will run through mid-August, breaking just before the Rams' first home preseason game, Aug. 16 vs. San Diego.
The university is about 15 miles north of downtown Milwaukee, along the shores of Lake Michigan, approximately 395 miles from St. Louis. Concordia is a liberal arts institution with an enrollment of about 6,000.
The Rams trained at Maryville University in 1995, their first year here after moving from Los Angeles. Then they held camp at Western Illinois for nine years before shifting to Rams Park from 2005 to 2007.
