  • Rockies (W) (Redman) vs Cardinals(Looper) 7:35 CDT

    Let's go Redbirds,......

Braden Looper looked like a natural early last season when he finally got a chance to pitch in the St. Louis Cardinals’ rotation, but he struggled as the year wore on.
He’s off to a solid start again in 2008 - one that he hopes will lead to a better finish.
Looper will look to make his third straight impressive start for the first-place Cardinals on Tuesday when they continue a three-game series with the struggling Colorado Rockies.
Looper (4-1, 3.86 ERA) was picked by St. Louis (21-12) with the third overall pick of the 1996 draft, but pitched just four games with the Cardinals before stints with Florida and New York. The right-hander averaged 28 saves with the Marlins and Mets between 2003-2005.
He spent 2006 as a set-up man in St. Louis before being tried as a starter in 2007, and manager Tony La Russa’s decision looked great early on. Looper went 6-2 with a 2.29 ERA in his first eight starts, but by the end of the season, he was 12-12 with a 4.94 ERA.

Looper has pitched well thus far in 2008. Save for one poor start, when he allowed seven runs in three innings in a loss to San Francisco, Looper is 4-0 with a 2.12 ERA in his other five outings.
He allowed two runs in six innings in a 5-2 win over Cincinnati on Wednesday, his first appearance since tossing seven shutout innings against Houston on April 25.
“I was really pleased,” Looper told the team’s official Web site. “I didn’t feel nearly as sharp as I did last time, so I was really happy that I was able to kind of battle through it. … As a pitcher, that’s satisfying.”
Looper allowed six runs in 5 2-3 innings of an 8-3 loss at Colorado (12-20) on May 29, his lone start at Coors Field.
The Cardinals’ stellar pitching may be the biggest reason for their surprising start, but as usual it’s been first baseman Albert Pujols who has led the way offensively.
Pujols did it again on Monday in Colorado, but in an unconventional way. At second base with one out in the ninth inning of a tie game, Pujols scored from second base on a groundout by Rick Ankiel to give St. Louis a 6-5 win.
“He gets a lot of recognition for swinging the bat, but he plays a good defensive side of the diamond also and he’s an aggressive base runner,” Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said of Pujols. “It’s the way things are going for us right now.”
Colorado hasn’t played much like the defending NL champion this season, and over the last two weeks, it’s looked like one of baseball’s worst teams.
The Rockies have the record to prove it. They enter play Tuesday tied with San Diego for last place in the NL West and the worst record in baseball, and they’ve dropped 12 of their last 15 games.
Hurdle’s team, however, was just 14-18 at this point last season, and went on to win 90 games.
“Am I shocked? No,” Hurdle told the team’s official Web site. “But I’m not happy with it. If you play the way we have played, and you expect something much different, you’re kidding yourself. The record is what it is. We’ve earned it. And we’re the ones we have to turn to get out of it.”
Mark Redman (2-2, 6.99) will start for the first time since there was speculation the veteran left-hander might be released.
He was sent to the bullpen after giving up 10 runs in a loss to Los Angeles on April 26, and has appeared once since, pitching 1 2-3 shutout innings against the Dodgers on May 2.
