  • Let's talk poker - should I be playing more?

About 2 weeks ago I started playing on my lunch hour -

    I play 3 - 6 limit

    Winnings per day

    +50 +30 -100 -27 +40 +30 +50 +40.

    Overall up 110.

If you're a winning player, not a lucky player on a run, increasing hands played is important, because you'll profit long term.

I was a winning low limit hold em player online about 4 years ago -- $30 buy in plus $40 for poker tracker became $625. I was educated, discliplined, and played a system. But it took over too much of my life, and my hourly rate stunk relative to other things I could be doing. I still love to play live once or twice a year, but otherwise it's a habit I had to kick.

For on line play only. You "mine" your opponents while not playing, so when you get to the table, you have superior info about the abilities of the table.

My goal is to stick to limit until I get up a grand.

After that go to no limit and stay there unless I go down 500.

One day you'll eventually tire of the constant bad beats you'll receive from playing limit poker and you'll try no limit.

Not only will you never go back to limit poker, but you'll wonder why you ever started there.

If you like it and can afford it .... by all means.

So you are saying I should go to no limit now?

It seems like as long as I play with my head I can do okay there.

                      I disagree with that plan.

Limit and NL are VERY, VERY different games, and I don't think $1000 is nearly enough bankroll for a NL seat because you can't financially control the swings.

You might be a terrific limit player, and stink at NL. Very few novice players are skilled at both.

So you would recommend staying at limit until I get up what?

In a $1/$3 NL or $3/$6 NL, make your $2,000 AT LEAST, put $1200 in the bank, take $800 to the cheapest NL table you can find, and prepare to pay for an education.

Limit is a science. NL is an art.

I work every weekend - so I don't think I will be able to make it.

Just checked my schedule and I am working until 9 that day.
