  • liek whoa!!!1 Pirates release Matt Morris, eat $10 mil in guaranteed salary

PITTSBURGH -- Matt Morris, the veteran right-hander added by the Pittsburgh Pirates late last season to stabilize a young rotation, was released Sunday after failing to pitch past the second inning in his latest start.

    Morris

The decision to cut Morris will cost the Pirates more than $10 million, in addition to what they already have paid him this season. Morris is making $10,037,283 this season, or about one-fifth of their payroll, and has a $1 million buyout for 2009.

Mick Jagger is in better shape than far too many NBA players. It's up in the air whether the same can be said of Keith Richards.

TLR would still use him in a playoff game. He's a veteran.

wow. I thought they were giving him one more start. I know he has a lot of money to comfort him, but I still feel bad for Mo. I think he's a good dude.

Profession wise for Matty Mo, I may feel a bit bad, but his bank account isn't shedding a tear.

I need to come up with who I blame. This will be my topic of thought today.

Thanks for saying that. Glad I am not the only one who sees it.

Not to worry, I'm used to hearing it. I really try to be a fan of this team, but with deals like this, I can only have a very causal interest.

It's the same trend year after year after year: emerging stars traded away for never-will-be players (see A-Ram for a bag of trinkets, Leiber for Brant bleeping Brown); watching stars walk for nothing (Jason Christensen, pre-HGH Bonds, Bobby Bonilla); prospects traded for over priced veterans (Matty Mo); the signing of overpriced but washed up talent (I'm looking at you, Jeromy Burnitz), and even taking chances of players who scratch their name on the dotted line and act like babies once they arrived in Pittsburgh and had to compete for a job. That's right Mr. Mondesi, hang your head in shame, and don't think I forgot about Derek "Operation Shutdown" Bell, two of the biggest wastes of talent to wear the bucco uni in the last 10 years.

Actually, I should take that back, Derek Bell was the ultimate Pirate: he lived on a boat and stole money since he still managed to make 4.5 mil in guaranteed money after he was released.

You guys definately deserve better. When I was a kid, the Pirates and Orioles were contenders on a yearly basis. Nowadays they bring up the rear of the division.
