Read about this in the Economist today.

Sure, people who believe in an old man that lives in the clouds who will give them eternal life ought to be happy.

Wow. I don't believe in the Invisible Man In The Sky, but I never would have made a statement like that.

Could you possibly have found a broader brush?

well dad called me today with the stupidest fucking joke I've ever heard as it was making fun of the science of evolution. He was happy and I was pissed. he and the rest of my family excluding my brother seem to embrace ignorance like it's cool. I couldn't even argue with them last night because their arguments were so fucking off base that it would have taken me 3 hours to explain to them what evolution is. fuck you ben stein.

for that conversation I was definitely a liberal.

Could you repeat the joke? I could use a good laugh. Not at the joke, but at the stupidity of people who don't understand science.

And, FWIW, here is a sight that refutes the crap Ben Stein is selling.

something like people who study evolution are monkeys or something...oh shit I forget. I was absolutely enraged, but I had to play it off like it didn't bother me. I am washing my hands of their thoughts on this. They can go on thinking like that. And I will tell them I am voting for that non pledging of allegiance, America hating obama.

                      thanks for the link.

The only thing Gene Simmons ever taught me was that even ugly guys can get hot chicks if they're in a band.

Wrong again...they have all the money.

                          Why wouldn't they be happy?

Well the whole meaning of the word "conserve" is to preserve... or to in a sense limit the idea of change. Change is tough, it requires going outside your comfort zone and this could certainly translate into varying degrees of unhappiness.

Take the recent turn of economic events. After 911 the economy started to take a slide into a recession, in order to preserve our way of life the Republicans used artificial and temporary means to prop the economy up ($300, low rates on credit, housing). Those measures preserved our way of life for a few years before it collapsed under its own weight. So now, we get more low rates, shitty currency and $600, just so we don't have to deal with the reality that our country is fucked up.

Again, the idea of evolution flies in the face of preserving something. For all we know, Earth has been around for 6,000 years... well except for that whole geological, fossil evidence thing. Sometimes they marginalize the theory of evolution by proposing ridiculous chain of events, like suggesting sarcasticly humans evolved from bacteria. If the idea of evolution is correct, is it possible that the world as we see it today may not last forever - may it evolve into something different than it is today? Evolution also suggests mortality... oh the tragedy of it all.

Basically, the longer we maintain the status quo, the less change we have to deal with, the longer we forego reality, the longer we will be blissfully happy. It makes sense. The white picket fence, 2.4 kids, Church every Sunday at 10:00 a.m., 1 SUV, 1 minivan, an extra sports coup, cheap gas, a dad with a 6-figure income, and a mom at home to do chores... now that's conservatively happy. An up and down economy, mortallity, change... who has time to deal with that.

When things are good, it's time to jump on the conservative bandwagon and make it last forever. When things end up in the shitter, because the system has flaws, then we'll lean towards the liberals and their hurtful, unamerican, socialist, communist, change policies to put it back on track.

Hell even the Republican candidate for President is bashed by most conservatives for being too liberal. Only in a time when things are all screwed up can that happen. At the end of the 1990's when things were awesome for almost everyone, we could afford to put a half wit good ole boy in the Oval Office and just ask him not to touch too much, smile and try to be polite, but not too polite. That won't do any longer... at least until things are good again.

More people would vote for Democrats if they believed that would actually make the world a better place.

Personally, I'd like to the US practice a less interventionist foreign policy...but that doesn't necessarily mean the "world" would be better off. It might be worse off but we would be better off because we wouldn't have so many guys dying for no good reason and pissing away billions of dollars.
