Clinton says U.S. could "totally obliterate" Iran

By David Morgan Tue Apr 22, 1:43 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton warned Tehran on Tuesday that if she were president, the United States could "totally obliterate" Iran in retaliation for a nuclear strike against Israel.

On the day of a crucial vote in her nomination battle against fellow Democrat Barack Obama, the New York senator said she wanted to make clear to Tehran what she was prepared to do as president in hopes that this warning would deter any Iranian nuclear attack against the Jewish state.

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran (if it attacks Israel)," Clinton said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them," she said.

"That's a terrible thing to say but those people who run Iran need to understand that because that perhaps will deter them from doing something that would be reckless, foolish and tragic," Clinton said.

Is it premature to ask where this ranks with axis of evil, smoke them out of their holes, and crusade?

She said something the other day that little to no press about a nuke attack to protect any of our middle east friends.

              At this point?

              That's a good one.
From this day forward, I no longer shall tinker with the machinery of death.

For more than 20 years I have endeavored-indeed, I have struggled-along with a majority of this Court, to develop procedural & substantive rules that would lend more than the mere appearance of fairness to the death penalty endeavor.

I feel morally and intellectually obligated simply to concede that the death penalty experiment has failed.

The path the Court has chosen lessens us all. I dissent.

Well, doesn't threatening nuclear annihilation on another country trump lying about sniper fire?

Doesn't Israel have their own nuclear weapons?

Yes, perhaps she is saying if you dirty Iranians take out the Jews with a first strike. We will take you out.

I sure wish politicians would not discuss the use of nuclear weapons so cavalierly.

I can't imagine why she has gone down this path.

Because she's exactly like any Republican when it comes to defense. I think it's pretty obvious the two major parties will never stop the ongoing war machine.

She's just desperate now and is trying anything she can to spark discussion about herself. Too little and much too late.

Barak and Mcain will be pressed to make just this sort of pledge. And all will in one way or another (if they haven't already).

They can not just say that we are Israel's strongest ally and will continue to be.

A real 3rd party is what we need. But, they can't be too radical or they will never get any support.

                            Why?

Neither of them should follow her suit on this.

                            That's nuts.

they may not use the same sort of language, but they will get the question. I'd be surprised if it isn't a direct question in a debate.

McCain will say it and Barak can hardly risk being 'anti-Israel'
