  • [Cubs] Soriano injury serious?

....he came out of the game tonight in the first after he made his signature little "hop" in the outfield catching a pop fly. He was limping badly, and had to be helped off the field. Injury reportedly to his calf.

After the game the Cubs announced an MRI tomorrow, but the guys in the clubhouse (Piniella in particular) were talking that he'd be out for a while.

    Muscle strain? Achilles tendon?

My parents were up here for the first weekend of the season. We went to the game, and they were just amazed that Soriano was getting booed. "It's the sixth game of the year!" Yes, my Pops made a sample size reference. I got a little weepy.

Cubs fans generally don't need more bad news, but they might get some.

              Soriano

Alfonso Soriano left the Cubs game against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday in the top of the first inning at Wrigley Field with a strained right calf.
After the Cubs beat the Reds 9-5, Chicago manager Lou Piniella told reporters that Soriano was undergoing an MRI and the team would know the results on Wednesday.

Moving to his left for a shallow fly ball to left field off the bat of Ken Griffey Jr., Soriano made what has become his trademark skip to make the catch and landed awkwardly. He immediately began to limp, favoring his right leg, and was helped off the field.

"He'll probably be a while," Piniella said. "It will be a while."
...all sounds like the language you hear before a 15-day DL stint.

You know, if he wasn't a Cub, I'd like The Riot a whole bunch. Scrappy, white and all that.

As for Soriano, well, you can't be surprised. He'll be back, oh, around the all star break.

Watching the archive from today on MLB.TV....

After it happened, the Cubs announcers said Sori does it as some kind of timing mechanism (they had interviewed him a while back). Still looks showoffy, I'll agree with you guys on that.

It was that same hop I've seen him do ever since he joined the Cubs, not sure what went wrong this time...I think he needs to come up with a new timing system.

That'll make a nice one of those fake "successories" posters for you guys. Right up there with Sosa and Nomar.

                        You and me both -

I like beating the best team on paper on the field and not on the injured list.

I hope the worst fielding second baseman to play in outfield is back soon.

I wonder if it's a little meniscus tear.

Dear God, KBF here. I'd just like to say thanks, once again, for allowing Dusty Baker and I to live during the same time period. Every time I think he's given me his last gift -- overpitching Prior in the playoffs, getting cocky in Game 6 vs. the Angels, blowing another game for the Cubs -- he does something stupid like pitching to Albert Pujols. Thy will be done, baby!!!!!
