  • New Mac Clones? from Psystar Corporation

    Reinventing The Wheel: Open Computing
We are proud to introduce the new wheel: Open. Mac enthusiasts have been experimenting on running the new Apple operating systems on commodity PC hardware ever since the Intel-based Apple computers were introduced in early 2006. This effort came to be known as OSx86 Project. The goals of the OSx86 Project have been realized and even the latest releases of OS X can now run on PC hardware that is commonly available but compatibility can sometimes be an issue. Psystar has assembled a system that is completely operational with Leopard called the Open Computer. We call it the Open Computer to reflect the opening of what has previously been a hardware monopoly.

Open Computer: The Smart Alternative to an Apple
Why spend $1999 to get the least expensive Apple computer with a decent video card when you can pay less than a fourth of that for an equivalent sleek and small form-factor desktop with the same hardware. Sometimes reinventing the wheel is a good thing. The Open Computer can work for new Mac users and Mac geniuses, alike.

New to Mac: I Want a Mac

You don't need to spend an arm and a leg to get the full OS X Leopard experience. Apple's Mac Mini is completely stripped and still expensive. Why would you want a stripped-down computer, anyway? You asked for a good and inexpensive computer that can run OS X and we answered with the Open Computer which is
    • less expensive than even the cheapest Apple computer out now
    • faster than most Apple computers out now
    • running arguably the best operating system available
    • ready to run out of the box when you purchase it with Leopard included. If you buy Leopard with your Open Computer we'll install it for free.

The "OpenPro" variant is an C2D box in an Antec P182 case. WTF are they offering here that you can't do yourself, cheaper, by building your own Hackintosh?

Nothing. This thing is a joke.

And apparently it still doesn't work right away. It still needs to be hacked.

A lot of people can't do it themselves, why do people buy computers rather than build one? If this works, you can get a Mac very cheap.

Most of the time, prebuilt systems are cheaper on top of being a lot less work. Here, they're more expensive than ones you can build yourself, and there's no way they have the full Mac compatibility thing going right out of the box.

              Just pass this one by.
