Ten state troopers will be in construction zones today in St. Louis County, ready to chase down speeders. The increased presence -- from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today -- is part of Work Zone Safety Week.

The patrol will be looking for speeders, motorists who follow too closely and other violations, said Sgt. Julie Scerine of the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Andrew Gates of the Missouri Department of Transportation says drivers are increasingly distracted these days and speeding through work zones.

"Folks need to pay attention, stay off their cell phones, make sure they aren't eating -- just be aware," Gates said.

In Missouri last year, five people were killed in construction zones. In 2006, 19 people in Missouri were killed in construction zones. Nationally, 1,010 people were killed in work zones in 2006.

On average, between 2002 and 2006, 15 percent of those killed in construction zones in the United States were pedestrians -- workers or bicyclists, Gates said.

The penalty for hitting a worker in a construction zone in Missouri is a $10,000 fine and loss of the drivers license.

Speeders must pay a $250 fine on top of the fine for speeding.

There's at least 6 of them on 40 between Brentwood and the Science Center. All with folks pulled over.

My wife's cousin lost both of his legs in a construction zone accident in Alabama a few years ago. Some clown lost control doing 65 in a 40. I have zero sympathy for speeders caught in these situations.

              70 arrests made

RICHMOND HEIGHTS -- Ten Missouri Highway Patrol troopers nabbed 70 motorists in a trap at the Highway 40 and Interstate 170 interchange on Monday in hopes of getting vehicles to slow down in construction zones.

The 70 arrests were on top of 104 warnings issued in the five-hour operation. The troopers' intent was to make motorists more aware of their surroundings and reduce the number of accidents in and near construction work zones, the patrol said.

Among the arrests, the patrol said 38 were for speeding, 15 were for people not wearing seat belts and six were for driver's license violations.

Three motorists were arrested on outstanding warrants. A total of 91 vehicles were stopped

Uh, how would a cop know that someone had a driver's license violation when deciding to pull them over?

They wouldn't, but they could pull you over for speeding and then arrest you on the grounds of having a suspended license.

Well, ok. But why not arrest them for both?

Maybe they did? Perhaps you noticed, but the math in that blurb doesn't really, you know, add up to anything.

I also don't get the "arrest". Do they arrest people for plain ol' speeding? Weird.
