  • Ryan to the DL.....Uncle Rico makes the club!

This would make 3 rookies who have never played in the majors on the opening day roster. When was the last time we had THAT happen!?

Cards Notes: Club leans toward Washington

February 23, 2008 -- Cardinals infielder Rico Washington
    (Chris Lee/P-D)

SPRINGFIELD, MO. — The Cardinals apparently will exercise their own roster bracket-buster today by anointing career minor-leaguer Rico Washington as the replacement for infielder Brendan Ryan, who will be disabled with a strained left side.

Manager Tony La Russa heavily implied Washington's promotion before Friday night's exhibition against the Cardinals' Class AA affiliate at Hammons Field. General manager John Mozeliak suggested the matter "seems to be leaning in that direction."

The move would come at the expense of veteran nonroster infielder D'Angelo Jimenez, who was considered Ryan's presumptive replacement until Washington reappeared in camp earlier this week. Washington has never received a major-league plate appearance in 11 seasons.

Jimenez, 30, has played all or part of the last nine seasons in the major leagues but was judged a less attractive replacement because of major league service that allows him to request free agency if the club should seek to outright him to Class AAA Memphis upon Ryan's return.

"If Ryan was healthy, he was going to Triple-A. So what's the difference if a guy's hurt?" La Russa said, noting Ryan's anticipated short-term absence.

The club retains an option on Washington, allowing it to demote him without complication when Ryan is activated.

Washington, 29, hit .333 and scored six runs in 15 Grapefruit League at-bats. He is considered a versatile defender, with third base considered his best position.

Added La Russa: "It makes so much sense. The pitching thing is a lot tougher."

Another leftover roster issue will probably be resolved by retaining Anthony Reyes as the club's fifth righthanded reliever over Kelvin Jimenez.

D'Angelo Jimenez said he had not handicapped the situation but was open to beginning the season at Memphis.

Once the Cincinnati Reds' starting shortstop, Jimenez has spent the majority of his last three seasons in the minor leagues. He hit .237 in 38 Grapefruit League at-bats.

Asked if he thought Ryan would return quickly, La Russa said, "I don't know what to think. . . . We'll go without him until he's ready."

Should Jimenez go to Memphis, La Russa said, "What he needs to do is go down there and play well enough so when we have a need, (Memphis manager Chris) Maloney says that's the guy. He's got obvious ability and experience that would be helpful for us. . . . You don't force him on the roster because all of a sudden Ryan's healthy and you're stuck."

Jimenez is guaranteed $600,000 should he be placed on the 25-man roster. Washington is due the major-league minimum, $390,000.

Putting on my dhaab hat for a moment...

This move comes at the expense of D'Angelo Jimenez, one of Mozeliak's signees to add some depth to the middle infield...with Washington coming out of nowhere to snag a spot, is this a payback of sorts for Mozeliak overruling the staff for keeping Reyes at the ML-level?

    Damn, my head hurts...

I'm guessing a lot of it has to do with Jimenez's shitting of the bed most of the spring. Cool story though for a guy who has toiled in the minor's for a number of years to finally at least get a cup of coffee in the majors.

Although, I am surprised nobody over on STLToday has started a conspiracy thread about what you said.

Cool story. I like how the other players offered to fly his family in for opening day. That's some class right there.

EDIT: If someone knows how to edit out those ads go for it.

              Washington on board

SPRINGFIELD< Mo. -- Career minor-league infielder Rico Washington was the last player notified Saturday he had made the Cardinals roster.

Until manager Tony La Russa approached him shortly before Saturday's game, Washington was convinced he held a ticket for Memphis.

"I saved the easiest conversation for last," La Russa said after speaking to contestants in the bullpen derby. "That's a conversation I looked forward to having."

La Russa told Washington of the team's decision shortly before first pitch. When word reached the clubhouse, his teammates crowded around to congratulate Washington, who became emotional about a goal that took 10 years and 3,980 minor-league at-bats to reach.

Some of his teammates offered to fly Washington's family to opening day.

"Today is the best day of my career. I'll always cherish it," said Washington, described by former minor-league teammates as a humble man regarded as a class act.

Washington, who batted ninth and started at third base, will hold the sixth infield spot until Brendan Ryan recovers from a strain in his left side. Washington celebrated by launching an opposite-field home run in Saturday's fifth inning off Nick Webber.

"They say good things come to people who wait," Washington said. "Well, I've been waiting a long time."
