  • Talk to me about car insurance

I have 2 vehicles; a 2001 Dodge Minivan and a 2002 Chrysler 300. We have full coverage on both, $250 deductible, liability, collision, the whole 9 yards. Both cars are paid for.

My daughter is 16 and will be getting her license in May and I called the insurance company and they told me my insurance will increase about $100 a month.

Should I consider dropping my coverage down to just liability? I know, for sure I will increase my deductible to $500. Any other advice for me?

Smartass responses are expected and encouraged.

Liability only on the minivan - yes

I'd leave the 300 as it is.

I would drop my coverage down to liability on the minivan...but can you afford to buy a new car if you got in an accident?

Jesus. Liability only on a 7 year old car? You folks must be rolling in dough.

Is the daughter going to only be allowed to drive the minivan, or both? Limiting her to one car might make a difference in your premium, but I'm not sure.

Definitely raise your deductible to at least $500. I'd consider going up to $1000 on the minivan, rather than doing liability only.

J P Moneybags here - and it's common knowledge a 7 year old minivan gets totaled if you sneeze on it -

                  Just saying.

                    This is a good idea.....

Shop around too, you may get a better deal from a different company, and if you take your homeowners insurance to them too, they usually give you a better discount (Allstate gives me a 20% discount). If your daughter has at least a B average in school, a lot of companies will give you an additional discount. And keep in mind girls are cheaper than boys when it comes to car insurance.

Holy shit. I just looked up the value of a 2001 Dodge Caravan on Kelley's Blue Book - $915 to trade it in.

Fuck man, report the thing stolen, collect on the insurance, and go blow it on coke and whores. To hell with your daughter.

Drop both cars to liability, raise your deductible and think about switching to AAA. Geico can't come close to my premiums but then again I've been with them for 31 years, that may help. Insurance is a gamble. Feeling lucky?

I had my deductibles at $1000 for a long time on the Cherokee and never changed it and it screwed me when the car was attempted to be stolen (engine kicked off when the ignition was taken out). I went to geico last week and found out that I can have $500 deductibles for less money per month. woo hooo!

It only has 74000 miles on it and is in good shape, so no way I am trading it in. I know I would get raped if I did anyway. I would be better off selling it myself.

The coke and whores idea is a good one though.
