  • Cuonzo Martin hired at Missouri State

    BY NORM SANDERS

    News-Democrat

Lincoln High graduate Cuonzo Martin from East St. Louis was hired Wednesday as the new men's basketball coach at Missouri State University.

Martin, 36, was a Purdue University assistant for the past eight seasons and spent last season as the Boilermakers' associate head coach.
He replaces former Missouri State coach Barry Hinson, who was fired March 9 after nine seasons with the Bears.

Martin helped lead Lincoln to the final two of its three straight state championships from 1987-89. After a year at prep school, he starred at Purdue from 1991 to 1995 and ranks 11th on the Boilermakers' all-time scoring list with 1,666 points.

Martin averaged 18.4 points as a senior, finishing his college career with 179 3-pointers.

FWIW, Former HC Barry Hinson is in the running for the vacancy here @ WIU.

Great move by Missouri State, IMO. Cuonzo's a good coach and recruiter...if he can work some old connections into a St. Louis metro recruiting base he'll be in great shape in no time.

Interesting.....my senior year at McCluer North in 1988, he and Notre Dame/NBA alum and Lincoln teammate LaPhonso Ellis were the best players in the metro area......those old Lincoln Tiger teams in that era were pretty dominant along with Vashon......

I'm happy with the hire. Maybe now MSU can get some real players instead of the country bumpkins that live in this area.
“I’ve always stated, ‘I’m a Missouri Tiger,’” Anderson said March 13 after Arkansas fired John Pelphrey, adding, “I’m excited about what’s taking place here.”

Asked then if he would talk to his players about the situation, he said, “They know me, and that’s where the trust comes in.

                  That is a good hire.

I had a brainfart when I first read the headline. I was thinking he went to Central Missouri State. I was tripping and started thinking of SMS instad of the current Mo. State.

Good hire. I always liked Cuonzo.

Mizzou is my #1 team but in basketball I root for Missouri State and SLU too.

One of my favorite college players ever, and it's only half because of the name.

Great hire. Had hoped he would have gotten the SLU job, but I guess Biondi wanted a big name for the new arena.

Dear God, KBF here. I'd just like to say thanks, once again, for allowing Dusty Baker and I to live during the same time period. Every time I think he's given me his last gift -- overpitching Prior in the playoffs, getting cocky in Game 6 vs. the Angels, blowing another game for the Cubs -- he does something stupid like pitching to Albert Pujols. Thy will be done, baby!!!!!

Last time I checked, ex-Bears coach Barry Hinson was looking at going to Mercer.

                              Mercer?
