  • World's Greatest Rock Drummer

Please vote. I put the "rock" in there, because I'm not familiar with Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and some of the other jazz and swing drummers.

Being a huge Rush fan, I love Peart, but of all the drummers I've ever heard, Bonham had the best sound. Bill Ward is another and a terribly underrated skinmeister.

Apologies to the Lounge if this thread is lame.

Sort of hard to argue with Bonham.

I had to give a vote to Peart. trigger is a vote for Moon.

Everything else is up in the air. The greatest will be crowned, eventually.

                  No it isn't.

If the poll was "Greatest rock drummer not named 'Keith Moon', 'Al Jackson', or 'Charlie Watts'," perhaps you could make a good argument for John Bonham.

I guess I don't get the Watts thing.

He does a great job keeping time.

"Less is always more, cat." Al Jackson, Jr. describing why he and Charlie Watts rule.

It's all about the rock drum. The rock drum is the snare drum. One of the reasons I don't have much good to say about an obviously freakishly talented guy like Neil Peart is that too often the Rush drummer forgets that he has a rock drum to beat on.

Anyways, no one in 40 years of rock history has been able to duplicate the snare sound of Al Jackson....except maybe Charlie Watts on "Gimme Shelter" (his badda-badda-badda-BANG on that song is one of the coolest understated drum moves in rock history).

Poor Al Jackson was murdered execution style by his estranged wife and her boyfriend, something of a contract killer in 1975; (Jackson was bound and then shot five times in the back.) He remains one of the great lost performers in rock and soul history. And just because this performance absolutely rules in every imaginable way, here's one of my favorite Al Jackson songs on the drums. That snare is just unbelievable:

                      More greatness:

Folks at all those Stax/Volt session in Memphis tell it that the guy who ran thing in the sessions wasn't Steve Cropper or Booker T.--it was Jackson, and when Otis wanted to do stuff like fool around with the tempo and dynamic of a song like "Try A Little Tenderness", it was Jackson who made it happen.

I loved Bohham but nobody played like Moon.

I love Peart, but Bonham, easily.
