  • Sports Illustrated To Publish Its Entire Archive Online — For Free

Sports Illustrated, which faces fierce daily, even hourly, competition with ESPN, Yahoo Sports and others, has something its main rivals do not: a 53-year trove of articles and photos, most of it from an era when the magazine dominated the field of long-form sports writing and color sports photography.

On Thursday, the magazine will introduce the Vault, a free site within SI.com that contains all the words Sports Illustrated has ever published and many of the images, along with video and other material, in a searchable database.

Well, that is tremendously fucking awesome. Do I look forward to, say, reading SI's coverage of Bill Mazeroski's walkoff? Yes, yes I do.

They have a pic on the link page that I can hardly wait to read more about. The Ali-Frazier fight from 1971.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I remember the receptionist at my dentist gving me that issue. I must have read it about 300 times. I found it hard to accept that Ali was beaten.

Oh hell if they did that I might as well retire right now. I could spend all day listening to Dan Kelly and reading old SI articles.

Will this include the swimsuit issues? =]
When you say to your neighbor, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night if that's alright with you," what you really mean is, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night."

Wow. I'd love to re-read "The Boxer And The Blonde", or "The Toughest Coach There Ever Was", two of Frank Deford's best pieces from the era of my youth.

The story of the Gus Macker basketball tournament might not've been as well-written or as important, but it was the one I really enjoyed the most from my high school years.

So wouldn't this make subscribing to the magazine basically obsolete?

Aren't most news papers all available online? People still subscribe to those...
