JUPITER — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Matt Clement continued his journey back from shoulder surgery on Monday with his second live batting practice of the spring.
He threw 30 pitches to minor leaguers Joey Hage, Ryde Rodriguez and Charlie Pelt. He said a likely future schedule would be another live B.P. on Thursday.
"I think I definitely took a step forward. I felt like I was pitching a little bit more, rather than just getting used to the mound. I thought the action on the ball was good. I thought my mechanics weren't consistent enough, but way more consistent.
"I still don't have the command on my slider I'd like to have yet, but I think I've put my body in the right position to get command of the stuff," Clement said.
Roving minor league pitching coordinator Dyar Miller oversaw Clement's work, which included eight sliders and 22 fastballs. "I thought it was good. I know it looked pretty clean. His sliders were coming out of his hand pretty good, but they weren't quite there yet. He had good tilt on them," Miller said.
    DUNCAN'S RETURN
Starting left fielder Chris Duncan stayed back in camp Monday despite original plans to go to Orlando for the game against the Atlanta Braves.
Duncan has been sidelined since missing a start on Friday due to back spasms, which he experienced Thursday.
He appeared healthy running drills Monday, which included sprints around the bases.
"I'll play (today). They just didn't want me to go on the bus. They were afraid (my back) might tighten up," Duncan said.
    REYES' SICKNESS
On Monday at the clubhouse, pitcher Anthony Reyes did a light workout after having missed his scheduled start Sunday against the Braves due to what he said was the flu.
"I slept a lot yesterday. I'm a little achy and tired. I'm just taking it a little easy now," he said.

yeah. maybe we should have overpaid someone who is okay or good rather than overpaid people who are terrible.

                  Job hunting

Jeff Weaver is unemployed, three weeks before the start of the season. The former Dodgers and Angels pitcher won the game that clinched the 2006 World Series championship for the St. Louis Cardinals, but he is 15-27 with a 5.96 earned-run average the last two seasons.

The Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals have expressed interest, said his younger brother, Angels pitcher Jered Weaver. Jeff's recent numbers might not sparkle, but he averages 190 innings a season with a career ERA of 4.72, in many years enough for a job offer if not a lucrative contract.

Jeff is 31 and is not retiring, Jered said.

"He wants to get four or five more years in," Jered said. "He's working out and trying to wait it out, just trying to get ready."

"Can't buy what I want because it's free...

Izturis and his .091 average go after the 2nd spot today.

Just his luck Albert is out and he will not see fast balls.

We have only 3 guys in the lineup today hitting better than .216. And one of them is Adam Kennedy! Yikes.

                            Oh...1-0 O's already.
