  • The Da Vinci Tower

    Holy fucking shit!

The Da Vinci Tower (also known as Dynamic Architecture Building) is a proposed 313 m (1,027 ft), 68-floor tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The tower is expected to be architecturally innovative for several reasons. Uniquely, each floor will be able to rotate independently. This will result in a constantly changing shape of the tower. Each floor will rotate a maximum of one full rotation in 90 minutes. The entire tower will be powered from turbines and solar panels, and five other buildings in the vicinity will also be provided with electricity. The turbines will be located between each of the rotating floors. They will generate 1,200,000 kilowatt-hours of energy from the movement of the floors, and the solar panels will be located on the roof. Construction of the Da Vinci Tower is expected to be completed in 2009.

A bit melodramatic in the presentation, but Dubai is pretty slick.

Sales guy I work with in Boston was rewarded with a trip to Dubai about 2 months ago. He said it was amazing the amount of construction going on there. Something like 40% of the world's supply of high building cranes are there or something like that.

The thing that's even more amazing to me than all the tall buildings is the man made islands they have built around there. I would love to know how they do that to keep them from washing away.

The stat I heard was 60% of the world's cranes where there...but 82.3% of stats are made up.

The construction is amazing. I guess when you have slave labor you can build impressive things (Pyramids, Acropolis, Burj Dubai, etc...)

There are some good Discovery/TLC/BBC specials on the first Palm Island project. From what I understand, they're working on the second Palm Island and even thinking about a third. The there's also the "World Islands" which are a series of ridiculously expensive small islands that combine to form the shape of the Earth. It's pretty cool stuff.

I've heard the same crane stat about Beijing. Apparently there aren't any cranes anywhere else in the world.

Dubai and Beijing account for 120% of the world's cranes. The other 28% are building bowling alleys.

"Since the dusk of time, mankind has seeked..."??????

Dubai should probably invest in someone with an english degree to kick things off.

They have enough money to make that grammatically correct.

About 30,000, or 24 per cent of the world's 125,000 construction cranes, are currently operating in Dubai, according to the organisers of the Conmex construction machinery exhibition.
