It's been a while, so I'll note for you guys that there are currently TWO Torino-1 threats bearing down on us simultaneously:
2008 AF4 has a 1 in 42,000 chance of impacting on January 9, 2089. If it does, it will hit with a force of 2510 MT, pretty damn significant. Call it fifty million dead if it hits anywhere in the continental US.
2007 VK184 is still around, and has now been upgraded to reflect its 1 in 3,030 chance of hitting us on June 3, 2048. Given this very high impact probability, the only reason it's only a Torino-1 is that it's only good for 146MT if it hits - enough to destroy a major metropolitan area, maybe 5-10 million dead.
I note in passing that the next major impact possibility is coming up on July 11th of this year, when 2006 CD may impact us (1 chance in 156,250,000) with an impact energy of 396 MT. So this isn't about just cutting off your grandchildren - you could all be dead, dead, dead in less than five months!
