  • 60 minutes Tonight...Remote Area Medical's Lifeline

(CBS) One of the decisive issues in the presidential campaign is likely to be health insurance. Texas and Ohio vote on Tuesday, and those states alone have nearly seven million uninsured residents; nationwide, 47 million have no health insurance. But that's just the start: millions more are underinsured, unable to pay their deductibles or get access to dental care.

Recently, 60 Minutes heard about an American relief organization that airdrops doctors and medicine into the jungles of the Amazon. It's called Remote Area Medical, or "RAM" for short.

As correspondent Scott Pelley reports, Remote Area Medical sets up emergency clinics where the needs are greatest. But these days, that's not the Amazon. This charity founded to help people who can't reach medical care finds itself throwing America a lifeline.

For all the right wingers who think we don't need national health care, read the story, watch the video, and then go fuck yourselves.

I try to stay above that shit the way some people do, but after watching that I was ashamed.
I'm sure Reggie or someone will say they are lazy people who need to find a job, go fuck yourself. There were kids there, hard working under insured people who are no different than us.
A group that goes to Africa to give aid decided that they were places in America in just as much need, that is fucking shameful.
Be passionate about what you believe in, or why bother.

If the line has DJ King on one wing and Cam Janssen on the other, it's going to suck ass even with Wayne Gretzky as the center...

This is from August 2nd last summer---a 20 page thread called richest Americans are calling for themselves to be taxed.

Kucincich and Nader are the ones who have favored single-payer plans which make the most sense to me. I have to settle for the "it's a start" concepts of Hillary or Obama, which means maybe a gradual decrease for those who have great needs---but if you are going to be in a rage about the people not being served---lawyers and insurance companies are sometimes part of the problem.

You willing to give up the right to sue in cases of gross negligence? If so, I think we might have something to discuss.

                    kjoe:

I was disappointed that no one followed up on this point from Airshark. Even though I tend to agree more with democrats than I do with republicans regarding healthcare, I think they have a holier than thou attitude about it---and I am disappointed in all three frontrunners failure to deal aggressively with the issues caused by insurance companies.

Malpractice lawsuits---something we tend to associate with democrats---have an effect which deserves complete scrutiny if we want to make significant changes. I suspect the democrats have arguments they can spew out robotically about how it is not much of a factor at all---I am not familiar enough with the issue to have much of an opinion---yet.

By the way, yaks, there's group based right here in St. Louis that has been performing similar work since 1962. It's called Wings of Hope, based at Spirit Airport in Chesterfield. (http://www.wings-of-hope.org/)

When you're done fucking yourself, you might want to check them out. They can always use more volunteers. My son and I put some time in there over the last few years, and it's been a great cause.

That yaks... knows how to get through to people.

An organization I'm involved in works overseas to build and fix homes, community centers, etc., and we also do the same in the U.S. Should the government start building houses for everyone?

Modest though, about 3500 sq. ft. 4 Bedrooms and a rec room. No dining room needed. In ground pool and an outdoor kitchenette. And, if you could, a ground level trampoline.

                          Thanks.
