JUPITER, Fla. -- Cardinals Minor League pitcher Donnie Smith faces a felony battery charge resulting from an incident in a Jupiter restaurant last September.
Smith, 25, is alleged to have struck a man in the face at the restaurant Masa Sagami on Sept. 20, 2007. Masa Sagami is located very close to Roger Dean Stadium, where the Cardinals hold Spring Training camp and where their Florida State League affiliate plays its games.
A probable cause affidavit was initiated on Oct. 22 and filed with Palm Beach County on Jan. 22. Smith was arrested and booked by the Palm Beach Sheriffs Office on Wednesday. As of 2 p.m. ET Thursday, Smith was being held in Palm Beach County's main detention center in West Palm Beach on $3,000 bond. Smith will be arraigned on March 6. Smith pitched for the Class A Palm Beach Cardinals in 2007, posting a 3.03 ERA in 59 1/3 innings (37 games). He was a fourth-round pick out of Old Dominion University in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.
