Personal experience? I don't know much about them.

Heh. If you've ever seen Nokia-written software, you'd know that somebody else is going to have to build a lot of the features in this device.

Personal experience. But it's not really a comparison. I expect iPhones to be radically upgraded in the next two years - because if they're not fundamentally changed, people will start realizing just how shitty they are.

Looks pretty cool. Always liked Nokia, just need more proliferation here in the US.

Why do I want a phone that smells like an apple?

                  That's a pretty bold prediction.

By "radically", I really mean "done over from scratch".

OK, I'll bite. What will need to be done over from scratch? The software or the hardware? Or both?

Because the whole world seems to be in love with the software.

The software is still at its core a desktop OS ill-suited to how phones are actually used. The iPhone's biggest problem is that it's basically a pocket computer with a phone built-in, rather than a phone with a computer built-in. The first thing that has to happen is a lot of phone features have to be added. I'm looking at you, voice dialing. It is, right at this minute, illegal to use an iPhone in a car in California because there is no way to dial or answer it without looking at the screen.

The phone's blessed software is too based around its Launcher/Finder home screen - it's still far too much effort to just DIAL THE PHONE. Many times the user is left looking at a screen that has nothing to do with the primary function of the iPhone - it's a PHONE.

Jeff Hawkins once said that the killer app for phones has already been found - it's voice. If you don't do voice well, you're a shitty phone, no matter what other bells and whistles you have. The iPhone's big draw appears to be its web browser, actually; goodness knows its calendaring/synchronization facilities suck, it's voice quality is poor, it's tied to a shitty carrier, and it has a crappy data rate. There is no way to attach a second battery or bigger battery for longer life - and compared to a lot of modern phones, its battery life sucks.

So I envision the iPhone getting (a) smaller; (b) having at least the option of a dedicated touchpad (I'm thinking a thin fold-over to protect the screen); (c) an OS revamp that puts phone functionality first and foremost; and (d) grown up phone features, like voice recognition. And it's got to be made available on 3G networks and not just strapped to EDGE.

One more thing, ort - to see the problems with the iPhone, ask yourself whether you'd rather have a solid phone and an iPod Touch, or an iPhone. You should prefer the latter, right? I mean, it's only one thing to carry around. But I think most people who've used the iPhone will prefer the former.
