Insisting the organization retains enough flexibility to pursue another pitcher if necessary, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has spoken with representatives for 2006 World Series hero Jeff Weaver and 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon.
No deal is believed imminent; however, the Cardinals are apparently open to signing another arm to a minor-league contract if the forecast for Clement’s return grows more pessimistic. Pitching coach Dave Duncan removed Clement from his regular throwing program Sunday due to concerns about Clement’s arm strength. Clement has not appeared in a major league game since June 2006 because of shoulder problems that required reconstructive surgery the same year.
