Cold, gusting winds today will give way to a winter storm Thursday, and a second wave on Friday.
Each of the two storms will shower us with a combination of snow and sleet, forecasters say. Accumulation? Maybe up to two inches by dinnertime Thursday, and another inch or two by Saturday.
Benjamin Sipprell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the full impact is hard to predict now. The storm that forecasters are watching is still over the Pacific northwest.
The temperature in St. Louis at 10 a.m. today was 16 with winds gusting around 20 mph. Temperatures should hover in the low to mid teens overnight.
On Thursday, the winter storm could show up as early as late morning, starting as all snow, then mix with sleet as the day goes on. Sipprell said the greatest impact will be felt during Thursday's evening rush hour when the combination of sleet and snow pick up.
Interstate 70 will be a dividing line of sorts. Areas to the south of I-70 have a better shot at seeing snow and sleet.
The storm won't be continuous, he said. Sipprell predicts a reprieve Friday morning before the second wave moves in Friday afternoon.
