I think if he had staked out his territory first he'd be fine. It would be harder for a white person to stake that territory. At Harvard he would have been another in a long line of editors and not the first -

Even working with the poor - he would have been another in a long line.

I think his being White may have proved a small disadvantage - but not a deal breaker.

Obama has benefited from a monolithic black vote that was decisive in several early primaries. These were black voters that started out as Clinton backers. No way a white Obama lures them away from Clinton. With a solid black voting bloc, Clinton wins the early primaries and the bandwagon for the white Obama never gets rolling. Without race as a backdrop, Team Clinton likely does not self destruct against a white Obama.
