  • Ninth Straight 30-win Season For Goalie

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- After playing in hundreds of tight games, Martin Brodeur became the first NHL goaltender to win 30 games in nine straight seasons in a most unexpected way -- a laugher.

"It's a pretty good accomplishment," Brodeur said after the New Jersey Devils cruised to an 8-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night. "I'm pretty excited about it.

"Usually I don't care about what's going on, but this one is something nice. A lot of things go into it. Durability and the success of my career really shows in this record."

Brodeur (30-17-10) had to make only 20 saves in moving ahead of recently retired Patrick Roy for consecutive 30-win seasons.

If the NHL makes all the suggested rule changes, one of them is going to be known as the "Brodeur Rule." (Incidentally, I hate that rule change suggestion.)

      Brodeur is an all-timer.

Brodeur is NAILS. I would take Brodeur over Roy and Hasek to build a team around if I ever had the choice.

The suggested rule that goalies can't wander out behind the end line to play the puck. Brodeur is so unbelievably good at it. It's just as big a part of the Devils defensive success as the neutral zone trap is because one way to beat the trap is to dump the puck in and fore check like crazy...except you can't do that to New Jersey because Brodeur handles the puck almost as well as a defenseman, so he gets it and just calmly passes it out or clears the zone himself. And now he's spawned a generation of young goalies, like Marty Turco and Rick DiPietro, who decided to work on that part of their game as much as on their positioning and glove hand, and more and more goalies are becoming like third defensemen.

I don't know about that, but I do have a full-size third leg.
