  • Penguins discuss new arena being "underground"

    http://www.post-gazette.com/breaking...423arenap2.asp

The new arena that a California company is proposing to privately finance could be built underground, the chairman of the firm said today.

During a press conference in Pittsburgh, Michael Shapiro unveiled a conceptual design that would put virtually the entire building underground except for the roof, parking and a giant video screen.
I'm still not sure how I like this idea. IMHO, each arena has it's own identity and some are easily identified by it's exterior.

Where are the scalpers gonna hang out? :P

I like the idea, it would save a ton of money on cooling the place.

I like the idea, but I question how they plan to do it for $150 million. That's dirt cheap! Pittsburgh is a riverfront city too. It seems like they would have endless problems with drainage and water infiltration.

So their planning on having it resemble a giant in-ground swimming pool....

It makes sense, the Penguins are already dead, might as well bury them.

              Nice!

Isn't the arena that the Iowa Hawkeyes play like this? Someone told me that all you can see of it is the roof.

I wasn't dissing it. I was asking a legitimate question.

If I was dissing it, I would have said something like, "Wasn't that shithole the Cornholes up in Iowa play in built in what once was a garbage dump or something?"

                Notice the difference? :P

My first thought--Carver Hawkeye Arena. It is rather neat how you walk in and you are at the top level. The place is huge too as I got lost in it.

Their current arena is practically underground, too.
