Mubarak: Arabs Hate U.S. More Than Ever

PARIS (Reuters) - Arabs in the Middle East hate the United States more than ever following the invasion of Iraq (news - web sites) and Israel's assassination of two Hamas leaders, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (news - web sites) said in comments published Tuesday.

Mubarak, who visited the United States last week, told French newspaper Le Monde that Washington's actions had caused despair, frustration and a sense of injustice in the Arab world.

"Today there is hatred of the Americans like never before in the region," he said in an interview given during a stay in France, where he met President Jacques Chirac Monday.

He blamed the hostility partly on U.S. support for Israel, which assassinated Hamas leader Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi in a missile strike in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) Saturday weeks after killing his predecessor, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

"At the start some considered the Americans were helping them. There was no hatred of the Americans. After what has happened in Iraq, there is unprecedented hatred and the Americans know it," Mubarak said.

"At the start some considered the Americans were helping them. There was no hatred of the Americans. After what has happened in Iraq, there is unprecedented hatred and the Americans know it," Mubarak said.

"People have a feeling of injustice. What's more, they see (Israeli Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon acting as he pleases, without the Americans saying anything. He assassinates people who don't have the planes and helicopters that he has."

Israel says such killings are self-defense. But Mubarak said the assassination of Rantissi could have "serious consequences" and that instability in Gaza and Iraq would not serve U.S. or Israeli interests.

"The despair and feeling of injustice are not going to be limited to our region alone. American and Israeli interests will not be safe, not only in our region but anywhere in the world," he said.

Asked about Sharon's plan to pull out of Gaza, Mubarak welcomed any withdrawal that was agreed with the Palestinians and in line with a peace "road map" drawn up by the United States, the European Union (news - web sites), the United Nations (news - web sites) and Russia.

What got it to 9.8 in the first place, Reg?

And please don't say they hate us because of our virtues.

I'm glad they hate us for our freedom. I was worried they might hate us because we attacked and took over an arabic country completely unprovoked.

Because the Arab world has always needed a scapegoat for their shithole countries and their shithole lives. That's why they hate Israel -- who invented a country in 1948 and did immediately what Arabs hadn't done very well since the dawn of history, which is create a standard of living worth having -- and that's why they hate us.

If the US and Israel disappeared tomorrow, they'd only move on to someone else. It's a hell of a lot easier than taking responsibility.

Then I guess he'd be in favor of the US ceasing to send, what, about 1B$
              to Egypt each year?
When you say to your neighbor, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night if that's alright with you," what you really mean is, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night."

At the start of what? the Iraq invasion? If so, I don't know what changed to change their minds so much.

I don't think Reggie is far off. I don't think it would be as easy as some think to stop pissing off fanatical Arabs. I believe that if we tried to pull completely out of Mid East affairs (which isn't really possible) they'd still find reason to hate us. And we'd find a much larger threat from fanatical Muslims 30-50 years from now. And by then, it would be much harder to win the battle.

It is possible that this is a threat that will have to be fought at some point in the next 50 years regardless of how hard you try to avoid it.

Wow, what a broad brush you wield, Reginald.

What do you spend most of your day thinking about?

Let me guess - a mixture of family, job, future, sports, recreation, nonesense, and a million other things.

Why do you think Arabs are any different? I'd say 99% of them don't give a shit about the United States. They hope their kid's runny nose goes away soon, hope the neighborhood soccer team wins their next match, and wonder if they will get to see their cousins in a couple of weeks.

You really think they sit around all day steaming about the U.S. as a scapegoat for all their problems? And that this is a reason to militarily emasculate their country, so that this supposed seething hatred doesn't bubble up again any time soon?

Uh, Israel didn't "invent" anything. The Brits gave them their country, and despite the generosity, that wasn't enough, so the Israelis had to kick out a few thousand Arabs so they could extend the borders to what they thought was appropriate circa 1948. That kind of pissed off the Arabs just a smidge, and keep in mind this was before the Israelis had anything resembling a standard of living. They were still living in tents on kibbutzim. The Arabs were pissed about getting shafted by the Limeys, but that's not an uncommon sentiment around the world. And since we are their heir (both as superpower and culturally) we get to deal with the shit.

                        Moon --

Yes, they were given a country. And some Arabs got shoved aside, but not the entire freakin' Arab population of the planet, which is who currently sees us as the Great Satan.

And yes, they were living in tents at the beginning, but they sure as hell ain't living in tents now. Abdul still is, and that's the point.

                          Interesting.

So the Iraq war did not initially enflame the "arab streets". It was only when coupled with the assassinations by Israel and our non condemnation of it.
